Idylic Retreat in the middle of Ubud
from bali-mad-travellerThe hotel is truly an oasis in the middle of Ubud. The staff are wonderful and the food is fabulous. It was so lovely that it was hard to drag ourselves away from the hotel each dayt o go sightseeing etc .
We have stayed in several different room types over the years and all are gorgeous (great views out over the rice paddies next door) but our favourite would definitely have to be the pool villa's.
The main pool is lovely, as is the hotels' spa. Our kids were 5 and 9 on our last visit and they found plenty to enjoy at the hotel - the staff even taught them wood carving one aftrnoon!
Overall I would say this is probably my favourite hotel in Ubud and I have stayed at quite a few! It has the most convenient location if you want to wander around the Ubud Village area but it is so quiet you wouldn't even know what was going on outside the gates. The art gallery is fabulous (and we have puchased quite a few interesting artworks too over the years and are still enjoying them now).
where everyone knows your name
from rileysm0mExceptional Hotel
from JFH1107I had a suite room, which was really stunning - modern but warm, with Balinese accents. Large patio with daybed. Room-length windows with built-in window seat overlooking a beautiful rice field. Lots of nice amenities including a collection of Bali photo and design books, and a jar of homemade cookies.
There's a small restaurant, spa, gallery and very lovely infinity pool. Free wireless internet in the restaurant and lobby. The grounds were beautiful during the daytime, but at night they became magical, with hanging white paper lanterns and torches lit along the walkways.
The hotel is small but has a high staff-to-guest ratio. The staff - from checkin to housekeeping to restaurant - were consistently excellent. The GM stopped by my room on the first day to make sure I was happy with everything. I really can't recommend this hotel highly enough and would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Best Hotel we have ever stayed in!
from judithcharmersWe were like giddy children when we saw the villa. There was an outdoor living area with a day bed, mini bar, and dining table. Next to this was the plunge pool surrounded by decking and a and balcony overlooking the stream and small waterfall. Sliding doors opened out onto the decking were we had two sunloungers. Inside, we had a four poster bed, dvd, cd player, seperate wardrobe area and huge bathroom complete with a sunken marble bath directly next to a lotus pond seen through the glass panels.
But it wasn't just the room which made this special - the service was second to none. Nothing was too much trouble. You could have your breakfast on the patio at no extra charge. Every member of staff greeted you with a smile. They also arranged the hotel transport for us to go and see a local legong dance.
The hotel was located in the centre of the village - near loads of restauraunts and some excellent shops.
Overall - excellent.
Royal treatment at the Komaneka
from JohnandJimThe 60 smiling staff service 20 rooms, a ratio that ensures they know and greet us, often by name. The airy creamy-white rooms with polished limestone floors feature traditional wooden furniture. Their terraces are the perfect place to have a rest or afternoon tea or a pre-dinner drink.
But most importantly the rooms are set in a tranquil garden with rice paddy views bordered by a stream best viewed from the end of the pool while watching the squirrels play in the trees. It is a haven in the midst of this royal town, yet perfectly placed to explore the temples, market, arts and crafts shops and restaurants.
At night it is easy to venture out to a dance or musical evening in the town or the surrounding suburbs.
In the garden the restaurant pavilion is just large enough to accommodate the hotel guests. The tropical breakfast helps start our day, while afternoon tea features Balinese favourites, and at night the Indonesian specialities are an extra treat. Of course, there is a spa for pampering and a gallery where guests are encouraged to learn about Balinese culture.
We have been and will continue to be very happy here.

Komaneka Resort: outstanding
from 74whiteWe asked the hotel to arrange for a driver to take us to the volcano and within 15 minutes they had it sorted - a charming and patient driver and a comfortable car including a coolbox with cold towels, mineral water and an ipod - try listening to Gamelan music while your ears pop as you ascend the winding roads! On our last day we were leaving very early, so they brought breakfast to our verandah which was a perfect end to our stay.
International-class standards in an intimate boutique setting
from jukaykwekWe had a large and demanding group with multiple rooms booked for a surprise birthday party - Komaneka's staff, all the way up to Koman, the proprietor, took personal delight in making sure that every detail was in place. Special efforts included dressing up the dining area with festival Balinese decorations, clearing out an open area in the middle of the grounds to host a traditional dance performance, and careful coordination with another hotel to ensure that the birthday boy would not find out about the surprise. Above all, the staff expressed genuine delight in their tasks in spite of their tireless efforts.
Rooms:
Beautiful villa-style rooms ranging in price and size. Many rooms have a lovely view of rice padi fields. The high-end villas have their own swimming pools. The rooms are tastefully appointed with comfortable linens, quality furniture and stylish design that is modern yet incorporates local Balinese elements and natural materials like wood and stone. Lighting inside and outside was thoughfully designed, from reading lights to mood lighting cast on the ceiling rafters and stone steps outside the villas. Great attention to detail - including flower arrangements on the beds, nightly "bedtime story" card left with turn-down service, and comfy cotton sleeping tunics for each guest.
Service:
warm, cheerful and attentive. Communication was not a problem - everyone I interacted with spoke good English. When I called for a last-minute spa appointment and the spa was full, they went ahead and called their sister hotel to find someone there who could come over to Komaneka. Food is excellent. Although their dining room is not large, the kitchen prepares a broad range of dishes (eastern and western) with some excellent local cuisine.
Spa:
Pleasant facility on-site with very nice open-air treatment room with view of rice fields, steam room, and open-air showers. Polite and professional massage therapists.
Other Facilities/Service:
Secluded pool, with infinity edge that seems to spill down into a stream. WIFI internet in dining area and lobby (I understand plans to expand this to rooms, which would be nice). Nice touch is complimentary afternoon tea, with a selection of western or local treats.
Location:
Can't be beat. The resort entrance is right on Monkey Forest Road, in the heart of Ubud, so access to shopping and galleries is trivial. It was nice to be able to do small "trips" out to the main areas, then skip back to the resort for a rest before heading out again. At the same time, the proximity to the main road doesn't affect the resort's relaxing atmosphere. That's because the resort is thoughtfully laid out on a narrow lot, and as you progress in, it delightfully reveals itself a little at a time. First the gallery, then the lobby pavilion, then dining and villas scattered throughout in the garden, and finally the pool area spilling down the hill towards a stream. The result is super-convenient access to the best of downtown ubud with an instant transformation into relaxing tranquility within the resort.
Price:
At US$200 for a room with views of the rice padis, I rate this as good value compared with other resorts of similar 4-5 star quality. The Four Seasons and other ultra-high-end resorts may be nicer in fancy finishing and setting, but you also pay more than double the price. Komaneka's service and setting are world-class, and yet given its location, lay-out, facilities and outstanding service, I would expect to pay far more. It's truly a gem for the money.
Memorable Holiday
from LyviaYapThe resort has a very peacefull ambience despite its location at center of Ubud. Restaurants and cafes, the market, the palace, monkey forest and spa are at walking distance.
Resort service was fantastic and all the staffs were friendly and helpful.

Top Local Tips for Gianyar
Ubud for activities Ubud is in a much better location for physical activities like rafting, cycling, volcano treks and elephant safari's than the Kuta, Nusa Dua, Sanur locations. It was a very pleasant surprise to us, to find out how much we enjoyed the town and in retrospect, should have stayed longer and done all of our tours and adventures based in Ubud.
Staying in central Ubud If you want to explore the cultural attractions, shops and great restaurants we find it is more convenient to stay in central Ubud as there are plenty of very Rural feeling places right in the centre of town (basically there are rice paddies behind all the rows of shops!) that way you can walk around at your leisure rather than the hassle of waiting for hotel shuttles etc (there are no metered cabs in Ubud) On that note though some of the restaurants will provide transport to and from the restaurant if you call and request this service (such as Lemak)
bargain like a pro always bargain and ask for "the best price" because the merchants seem to enjoy bargaining and you will get a better deal that way. generally, bid 2/3 the price they initially give you. if you pretend to walk away they usually will lower the price too.

We get so much attention from the smiling staff -smile is a characteristic of Balinese people-, even from the owners who are everyday on the spot. You can exchange with them: they are very interesting people who received high education and know their country well. The management is very qualified and well briefed which is not so frequent as regard relationships with "tamu" as we are called!
Now one of the main attraction for me is the the Spa with lovely and competent therapists. What a delight!
The place is great build with wood and marble. The scent of the oil, the quality of the massages, the drinks offered before and after are delicious: "jamu" and "sari asam" . Taste and you will like them!
Of course the security of the place is high which is another + to the pleasure of staying there.
I can only recommend Komaneka Resort to all! Enjoy.
