Kamandalu has a beautiful view and beautiful pool villas, they are perfect for the honeymooners because the villas are very private and have a very breathtaking view you'll never forget. No one will ever knows anything we did in the villas. You should try it sometimes. They have also the perfect services. Have a great hide vacation in Ubud!!

Crumbling Charm

from fishclic
I came to Kamandalu for a conference in 2006. It's in a beautiful setting, with charming individual villas scattered around that are roomy, many with great views/private pools/sunbeds. The staff are gentle and sweet but not very sharp. It would be charming as a relaxing getaway hotel, but for a conference it was a nightmare. Forget about internet connections; there is only a very fickle wireless hotspot in the lobby.

My main gripe is that it would have been a fantastic hotel once but it's really falling apart, especially the older rooms. A rumour was circulated during our conference that it'd been closed for 10 years and reopened just for our meeting. Probably not true, but from the condition of the rooms, it was nearly believable. Sockets falling out of walls, broken drawers, motheaten tapestry and creaky floors. Showers with no hot water and slippery moss-covered outdoor showers. You don't want to know about some of the muck that floated up from the poorly maintained private pools....

All in all I'm not very sure that it's worth the rack rate.

Lovely Resort

from yuyuho
We were at Kamandalu Resort Ubud from 22Nov to 26Nov. We absolutely loved this property, it was one of the best resorts we even stayed at. Despite we only stayed in the lowest room catergory - Garden Pavilion, the room was so nice, relaxed and big, it has the balinese style high ceiling/roof top, marble floor, and a very cool outdoor shower. The villas was nicely designed with a small garden around the room, the bed was huge and very comfortable, overall the villa was very private & quite. There were also 2 day beds outside.
The buffet breakfast was very good, however 2 of the nights we stayed, the resort had a lower occupancy so we had a la carte breakfast, but it was plentiful and delicious.
The pool has a swim up bar which was really cool and the lobby was like a palace. There was nothing we disliked about this property and I would definately go back if I go to Ubud.
The property has a shuttle to Ubud centre which takes about 10mins so we did not have problems getting around. Even if you need to get a taxi, it only costs about AUD4 to AUD5. There are many nice local shops and restuarants in Ubud centre, also there is a market and along Monkey Forest Rd there are many places where you can get very cheap massage, facial or hair cut - about AUD10 for 1 hour massage.
Overall, Kamandalu is a very nice and stylish property in a great location with a stunning hillside view The villas provides privacy and relaxation and would be great for couples.

Somewhat disappointing

from Blankii
To be perfectly honest, my overall impression of this resort was that is was slightly disappointing. After looking at the Kamandalu website (which looks fabulous) and reading numerous positive reviews, I had pretty high expectations. In addition, the previous place we stayed on an earlier leg of our journey (Pat Mase Villas in Jimbaran Bay) was absolutely sublime – truly relaxing and luxurious accommodation with real 5 star service.

I guess the biggest disappointment with Kamandalu was that is promised a lot, but I don’t think it quite lived up to the 5 star status. The service, whilst acceptable, was certainly not 5 star standard. On one occasion we ran out of toilet paper and rang house keeping to ask for more. About 2 hours later the toilet paper hadn’t arrived, so I called again to find out what was going on and it arrived within 3 minutes! Obviously in this case someone just forgot and I’m reluctant to crucify people more making an honest mistake, but this was really just one example of the lack of attention to detail. Don’t get me wrong, the service wasn’t poor, it just didn’t wow me like many other places I’ve stayed in Asia.

One other big gripe I had was with the bathroom. It was small and cramped to the extent that two people would find it difficult to use it at the same time. Worse of all, the indoor shower had absolutely no water pressure whilst the outdoor shower had no hot water, making it virtually impossible to have a proper shower.

Having said all that, I can’t honestly say that this is a bad place to stay. Far from it. The grounds are lovely, the pool area fantastic, the breakfast was pretty good and the room was reasonably large (with the exception of the aforementioned bathroom). The private courtyard and outdoor daybed were also very nice – great for a relaxing afternoon nap.

All in all I think that if you go to Kamandalu without too many expectations, you won’t be disappointed. It’s good mid-level accommodation with some nice touches. If you’re expecting a wonderful romantic holiday where you’re pampered and treated like royalty, I’d recommend you find somewhere else to go.

Amazing Place. Perfect Hospitality and tranquility and peace.

We arrived in KAMANDALU Ubud- jetlagged from the UK and found it to be one of the most hospitable places that we have been. The staff are ALL absolutely wonderful, making you feel special and always smiling. They really make a nice place into an amazing place. We stayed in a jacuzzi villa which was very private and you really do feel close to nature with the frogs croaking outside in the evening and the early morning bird calls. The gardens are well tended and beautiful. The building and decor are not as slick and new as maybe some of the more polished new resorts, but this is more charming and close to the real Bali. The villas are made using natural materials thatch roofs and hardwood funishing with all mod cons and everything works well. Outdoor shower and jacuzzi are fab, but could do with an indoor one too for nighttime. The stone bathrooms and floors are excellent. The hotels in Bali are all down on occupancy at the moment, but this makes it all the more special as there are less people around and you have more privacy and easy use of facilities. The food in restaurant was lovely at all mealtimes. There is a taxi shuttle to Ubud town centre regularly and the spa treatments are very reasonably priced compared to perhaps more upmarket hotel chains. Whats nice is that Kamandalu is Indonesian through and through, its not a chain owned by a big corporate where the money leaves the country and its people. Stay here and you give something back to the people who make everything so special for you. Definately go to Bali, definately go to Kamandalu for peace, romance and culture.

Perfect tranquility.....

from TRV11
I was lucky enough to stay at the Kamandalu last year for only a few nites, but I vow to go back some day. For those reviewers that thought the hotel was a little "worn", perhaps then you should stick to destinations where climate ie. rain and humidity, will keep your resort looking shiny and new!!!!! This was the most beatiful villa resort!!!! It was unique and charming, and tranquil, romantic. The gardens were built into the side of a rice terrace, and once you got to the bottom there was a beautiful little pond that we could sit around. There were 11 travel agents in our group, and I can't even tell you how many hotels that we had all seen combined throughout our careers, and we all loved it, and highly recommend this hotel to anyone that wants peace and quiet, and a lovely inland trip to Ubud.

A little disappointing

from liddi
The hotel is located off a less attractive street than some others in the same price bracket, but is close to town. (On a more positive note, some of the shops in this area are much cheaper than others in Ubud - and you may not have gone there unless you were staying at the hotel.) On first entering the hotel it looks like the lobby area was designed a couple of decades ago - however, all the staff give a warm welcome. The hotel is nice, but the decor is quite dated and showing signs of wear and tear. My first reaction to our room was 'Wow!", and the views form the rooms are lovely. But on closer inspection there were numerous fittings and elements of the room that needed updating. Also, our outdoor jacuzzi had cold water only, which made it almost impossible to use at the time of year we were there. Basically, it looks like it's time for a refurbishment. In other ways, the 'lived-in' look of the hotel has given it a patina of age and the gardens are quite lovely. And the staff and service were excellent. But I think for the price you are paying, there are better options in Ubud. Overall, although we enjoyed our stay, I would have to say that we were a little disappointed given the cost.

loved the privacy and the view

Kamandalu is a great place for the honeymooners. Me and my wife just went there for our honeymoon. Guess what, my wife loves it! The view, the air, the villa, the bed, the bathtube, the outside shower they are so beautiful, perfect and relaxing. I highly recommended you to take the Pool Villa. I love the services, i love the privacy environment, just try it friends!!

Perfect Ubud Hotel

from bbdeluca
My husband and I stayed at a few other hotels in Bali and this was hands down our favorite. The staff was absolutely delightful, the food was amazing, great views of jungle, Balinese style decor, superb spa, etc.

When we arrived, the hotel had a better room available, so they upgraded us. We were impressed with the room. Private outdoor shower, comfy bed, outdoor day bed. It was dreamy.

We were there for Nyepi Day, which is a great time to be in Ubud to see the festivals. However, the power is shut off for this, so all the hotels run on generators. For some reason the power shortage was affecting the air conditioner in our room that night. Without hesitation, the hotel offered to upgrade us again.

I can't begin to describe the luxury my husband and I enjoyed for the next 2 nights. We were like two kids who had been given the keys to a candy store. Private villa with infinity pool overlooking ravine, huge outdoor living room, outdoor bed, indoor bed, outdoor shower, indoor tub, huge bed, private garden, etc.

Needless to say, the staff went out of their way to help us have a great relaxing vacation. Luckily for us, this was the end of our trip, otherwise they would have set the bar to high for us to have enjoyed the other places we stayed.

Highly recommended!

Pool Villa

from lubalips
Our first impression was wow. The entrance is like entering a palace. The staff greeted us and we were sat down and given a welcome drink. Then they checked us in with the usual formalities. We were then told that we were upgraded to a pool villa. The grounds are beautiful and it is setup like a village and each room is like a seperate compound. There was everything you could wish for; pool, lounges, daybed, sunken bath, outdoor shower, outdoor room with tv. We didn't want to leave our room. We got a bit restless so we decided to explore around the hotel and rode some bikes through the rice fields. There was an activites guy from the hotel who we just happened to meet and he showed us around. It was the highlight of my stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. I think that this place is perfect for honeymooners, couples or people who just want some time out. If you want a quiet place and want to be on your own this is the place for you.

decent hotel

from dmitry2009
a formber banyan tree hotel is very nice and the gardens are fantastic. the hotel however shows some wear, even if the staff try to do their best. the hotel village concept is great and in many ways we liked it more than the four seasons ( the same concept), it feels more authoentic then the four seasons.
our garden villa was very nice - with huge outdor shower and nice bale and garden. the bathtube was in marble and all amenities were really nice. four poster bed was great. staff is wonderful
on the negative side, brkf is nothing special( rather on mediocer side) and tennis court facilities are horrible for such a level of resort.

I tried the spa and it was good even though one can find the same quality massage in the donwtown for 7$ rather then 40$ as changed by the hotel

overall - good value and nice place but I have seen at least 5 resorts in ubud which are much better
