Top Local Tips for Pushkar
Pushkar or „how Shiva became our family-priest“, Pushkar or „how Shiva became our family-priest“, this could be the proper description for this story. Karma, our driver, warned us about this sacred place. There is a holy lake in the centre and basically the city was built around it. There are little marble stairways leading down to the water. And there are millions of priests. So Karma told us: „ The priests will come to you and ask you to beatify you at the lake. Then they will ask 500 Dollar in return from you. Don’t go with them. And don’t tell them, that I have told you. Because they will kill me!“ Ok, this is quite an explosive introduction to a new location. So what to do? We went into the city, petrified and not willing to talk to anyone. Boooooh. On the way to a cafe we met this young guy on a motorcycle, Shiva! He wanted to show us they way...of course. Too bad that this way was passing the sacred lake. And as we approached he announced, that he is also a priest and he will do the blessing, which we refused in the first moment. But his points were striking. After a beatification you will receive a red dyed bracelet that tells exactly that. So without the bracelet you will be approached and annoyed by countless self-declared priests. Good point, because the day was still young! Ok, let’s do it. We received a plate with rice and little amounts of colour-powder together with blossoms. At the base he was saying his mantra and I must admit his aura had quite an impact on me. First in Indian then in English he was saying his words and pouring the colours, the rice and the blossoms into the lake. Then he asked how many family members do I have? We agreed on 5 and then it became crucial. What amount would I like to donate for the beatification. And as always in India they don’t tell you a certain amount, but leave it up to you ´pay what you can pay`. And this is bull. Because I can pay a lot more then it would deserve on an Indian market. Anyway I told him 5 Euro and we agreed on 10. And then he announced that this would count for every family-member. I seldom had such a great laugh...Frau Doro paid another 10 and I got the permission to take photos, which was truly worth the effort. After the session everyone was happy and I took some more photos with my fisheye. Shiva declared himself our family-priest, so every family-member of mine should pay him a visit and a fistful of euros. Taking a glance at my fisheye he changed his order a bit: Next time I would be in Pushkar I would have to bring him a funky Fisheye, too. Understood? What do you have to do? „I will bring you a Fisheye, my family-priest.“
Pushkar Fair The well-known and marked with largest participation of all the festivals of Rajasthan, Pushkar is an important pilgrimage as well as the venue of a mammoth cattle fair. Bazaars, auctions, music and sports are highlight of this event. Recommended.
Need to take of things They charge too much you need to keep asking the shop owner to reduce the price.
