Not a five star

One of the better hotels in Pune, but surely not a five star hotel. Staff is very responsive to customer's needs and goes above to make you feel at home. The main issue with the hotel is the condition, it needs to be renovated. Alarm clocks don't work; I could pick up the safe and walk off with it. Broken fixtures in the bathrooms, fridge that keeps the beer nice and warm, missing the general upkeep of a five star hotel.

Good hotel

from JPLE
However, the air conditioning system needs some tuning. Everything was humid in the room, the sheets and even the floor covered by condensation. Although I called the front desk at 11h00 to report the issue, when I came back in the evening at
23h30, this request was still pending.
I gave a trouser for dry cleaning and I can no longer wear this trouser in the office...still ok for the week end though...
That was my first stay in this hotel in Pune, I usually go to another one further down on the road opposite to the railway station. I will probably avoid this hotel next time.

Pretty good....but

from AAA Trip Advisor Member
Up until check out this would have been a 4 star experience. The lobby is beautiful and ornate but very welcoming at the same time.

The room was fine. I've stayed in better but it was adequate and the bed was comfortable. A bit disappointing to not have a separate shower cubicle but not too big a problem.

I didn't eat in the hotel so I can't comment on the quality in the restaurants but they all looked very good.

My only problem was with the checkout which started badly by being extremely slow for no apparent reason.

I was asked the normal question of 'did you use the mini bar last night?'. Quite happy to be asked the question but when after replying no the receptionist said she would just phone housekeeping to get them to confirm this I was totally appaled.

I have stayed in hotels all over the world and have never been quite so annoyed by the staff as I was then.

It spoilt the stay and I wouldn't stay there again in case I was accused of drinking a bottle of water or some other such crime!

Good service - loud in the morning!

from Seereel
As probably everywhere in India the service all over was excellent and the staff really supports you with any issue!

In the morning you can hear though the sound of the "cab dispatcher" and this could potentially impact your sleep pattern.

The cab organization is anyway special since the hallway is very small and the cabs have to wait and need to be called when required.

The internet quality is rather poor - don't try softphones (e.g. skype) or do not expect a really high bandwidth (e.g. to send pictures).

After all a excellent hotel - especially the nicely dressed female staff will make your day anyway!

$100/week for Internet...Need I say more?

from assede1
The hotel gets bad marks for charging $100/week for internet access and for being so daggone expensive. They also played musak so horribly loud, I ask the ladies at the front desk if they were being punished for something. It was the same crappy music from my first day to the last two week later.

The staff was awesome. The main restaurant was pretty good as well. I didn't try the other eateries but heard they were good.

The spa and workout gym was really nice with great equipment.

There's definite room for some competition for hotels in Pune. The city was great!

Way too expensive!

from WorldTraveler0980
My husband and I stayed at the Sun n Sand for one night shortly after Christmas. When we checked in, the staff had a bit of an attitude. We went to our room and were dissappointed. The carpet was pretty dirty. For over $200 a night, we expected a clean carpet. So, while my husband went to go try to get us a new room, I sat looking on the window at the busy street below. As I sat, my view was rudely interrupted by a cockroach on the window! Needless to say, we had our room changed. The second room was much nicer. It must have been recently upgraded. The complimentary buffet breakfast was awful. Definitely skip it. I would recommend the German Bakery if you are looking for Western food. Overall, the hotel wasn't that bad but the staff was rude and the room was far overpriced. Honestly, I've stayed in better hotels in New York City for less money.

Market is cornered so no sense of customer satisfaction

from BitterRocket
It will be a good thing for travelers and likely a bad thing for this hotel when the proposed new hotels are built in Pune over the next 2 yrs.
This hotel has a corner on the market when it comes to the higher end and they certainly take advantage of it.
Having spent over $10000.00USD at this hotel from April through September, I tried to book one month in advance for another stay in late Nov/early Dec and can assure you that the level of attention given to repeat customers is "zero".
Several emails, phone calls from locals, contact with a "manager" (Mr. Karl), and even an offer to pay a premium got me no where.
In the few instances where I even got a response, there was always an excuse.
I ended up at the Central Park which is acceptable and the folks there were gracious.
When leaving India, I ran into a fellow at the airport that had never been to Pune, made his reservation 2 weeks ahead of time, and did get a room at Sun n Sand so I am certain that "they just do not care and know they can get away with whatever they want".
I have also had an issue with every stay because they try to "pad" the bill. This was also evident with other customers at the front desk checkout.
Like I said, the new hotels will be a blessing.

Enjoyable stay

from Seagulldan
Stayed here for 6 weeks Sep - Oct 06 & would happily stay again if I ever have to return to Pune.
I had a standard room which was very pleasant &serviced to a high standard daily. The hotel is on a busy road which may cause issues with noise if you are overlooking this, but it wasn't a problem for me.
The hotel has several restaurants which were all very good, although the menus can get a bit repetitive if you are staying for a while. Certainly, I had no "stomach problems" during my stay. There is an excellent Italian vegetarian restaurant (la Pizzeria) near to the hotel & the seafood restaurant opposite (Krishna) was also recommended, but not tried.
The bar is also comfortable & has a singer on Friday & Saturday nights - he is not to be missed!
The hotel staff were excellent - made a real effort to ensure that you had everything you needed & were all very friendly.
The gym & spa were well equipped & there is a salon in the hotel if you need it.
There is a modern shopping mall (Central) appx 5 minutes walk away, which was very useful & there is a shop within the hotel lobby which sells stuff like toiletries, power adaptors & travel guides, all seemed a bit cheaper than UK prices.
The only bad thing I'd say about the hotel is that the internet prices were fairly steep, especially if you are staying a while - aroud Rs800 a day (around £10). You could pay by the hour, but this was Rs380 (£4ish).
As others have said, if you are auto-rickshawing anywhere, insist on the meter or ask hotel staff how much it should cost.
Pune itself isn't great, not much to see or do, but I enjoyed my stay nonetheless.

Good business hotel, good location, great service

from bloody.badger
Stayed here for around 1 week in a delux room - quite big, all the standard toys and very comfortable. Mad traffic everywhere !
Service was very good - bit over the top sometimes, but concierge/car services were ace.
Good location, central (around 20 minutes from Pune airport), MG Road (shopping, restaurants) 10 mins in a tuk-tuk - 40 rupees, Laxmi road (very cheap shopping but skanky) 20 mins - 80 rupees.
In-house bar very good, wide drinks and cigar selection. Kebab-Hut in the baseline is very good - splendid menu try the lady finger, as is the Chinese restaurant.
Recommend it.
p.s. Try the 1000Oaks on East Street (just off MG Road) is a great pub/bar - outside bit cool, and inside oakey/plush seats with Euro/American music. Good atmosphere

A good choice for business travelers.

from Anabasis
While no where near a beach, this former Holiday Inn is largely inhabited by foreign business types who like its location close to the airport and its efficiency.

It has an open lobby with the elevators exposed (in the Hyatt Regency style.) In the lobby are some reasonable shops for souvenirs, a couple of restaurants and a bar. Breakfast is usually included in your rate here.

The rooms have flat screen TVs and modern art. They are on the smallish side, but quite adequate. Think of them as the “W” goes South Asian. Two of us were in separate rooms and had the same complaint – a shower that did not stay at a constant temperature.

The staff was not overly solicitous but did a perfectly adequate job. This is the old India, though, and there is an inordinate amount of paperwork associated with checking in.

Because of the booming software and other technology industries in Pune, business style hotel rooms are very tight. So book as far ahead as you can to get a room. We will probably try another hotel next time, but this was a perfectly respectable and pleasant place to stay on a business trip.

Home from home!

from HelzBelz
Stayed here for 9 weeks while in Pune for work. Clean comfortable, with fantastic staff!
Food menu is good, although can get a bit boring after time. Lovely pool. Gym was not open while I was there, but apprantly has opened now and is good.
Be warned - they are building anohter floor, and work can sometimes get noisy (it feels like they are drilling through the walls!) but this is limited to between 12 and 6.
No complaints, and would go nback anytime, Great location between Koregaon park and MG road.
