Great Hotel
from odowdchrPanaji's an under-rated city, much more charismatic than i imagined after previous trips to Goa and consciously avoiding the place (after staying in the awful Margao once i'd wrongly imagined Panaji to be similar..).
The Marriott's as good as you'll get in India, it doesn't feel as special as some of the other's in the Far East (like the incomparable JW Marriott in Phuket), but that's probably because of the slightly unfashionable location within Goa and the elongated shape of the hotel. It just lacks a bit of atmosphere as other people have said.
The swimming pools a bit of a weird shape, but again they're restricted with the site layout. When the wind blows in off the river in the afternoon there's a breeze strong enough to blow your towel away...but it makes for a heck of a tan.
One point to make is that it's not as expensive as i thought, though more expensive than the norm. for Goa.
I think this hotel has to fight hard for the business because it's not often you see Marriott's offered as part of package deals with UK companies. That's good because they know they have to be competitive on price.
Beer and room service were a third of the price as New Delhi Marriott and it's nice to go to a 4/5* hotel and not think you're being totally ripped off for the convenience they offer!
Rooms were excellent and the service was good.
It's also great when a hotel has an on-site bakery to supply the restaurants with fresh breads and cakes all day!
Recommended.
absolutely top banana!!
from wendy494Hotel food and drinks was expensive (we had 8 G&Ts and Jack daniels and coke - £40 and simply fish, whilst excellent cost about £70 but I did have wine which was about £20 as imported - the Indian wine was not good!) so we ate out most nights. Having said this the total bill for 3 weeks was only £600 and this included room service on about 4 nights.
Edu's and Mum's Kitchen (both good) are walking distance. Others worthy of note are: Delhi Dubar, Venites, Sheer-E-Punjab (in Hotel Aroma), Zen for thai style food, all of which 150 rupees in cab to Panaji.Get cab's outside hotel (Baptist Alfonso is a great source of info) as Marriott cab cost us 300 rupees for one way.
Do try further afield Sea Pebbles in San Paulo for great fish or Frank's in Baga for chateau briand (800 rups return in cab - meal and drink cost us less than this)The Italian Garden is also good in Calangutte - all vegitarian but a nice change from spicy food and good value
Coco Beach is 200 rups in a rickshaw (20 min drive & no sellers) and we found Bobby's a good shack (also visited Utorda beach - empty but sellers were a bit of a pest.
Lacoste shop in Panaji was good value with T shirts costing £25 when about £60 in England
Finally, do NOT book the overnight cruise on the floating Palace - it is a floating wreck and filthy dirty. We refused to stay on board and got our money back via Marriott travel desk - only down side to the whole experience.
Hope this helps those of you lucky enough to be going soon!

excellent. just needs new pool, and bit more atmosphere.
from tolbinyThats not to say the hotel isnt fantastic, because it is truely 1st class. We, like everyone else, were made to feel very welcome, and our room was very high quality. Its worth the extra to get views of the river in sunset.
People have said the pool inst the best. This is true. Whilst its very clean, and the beds are outstanding, the pool itself is long, but very narrow.....too small for a hotel of its size. Added to the fact that the beach is not good, there is room for improvement here.
The location, however, is great. Being close to the centre, and being central to get everywhere made life very easy. Whilst we were there, the Bollywood film festival was on. We managed to bluff our way in (4 of us) by saying that Becky, my girlfriend, was a hollywood superstar, and was the voice of mrs potato-head in toy story 2. It worked! We were treated like royalty, having our pics taken by the press, waving to the crowds outside, and giving interviews...where else could this happen. The pic included is a Bollywood starlet who we 'allowed' to be pictured with Becky. It was a brilliant, and hilarious night. Even down to armed guards guiding us round, keeping us out of harms way. That night was worth the holiday in itself.
We would recommend the hotel, but only for the hotels luxurious offerings, and location. If you fancy a beach holiday, we found much nicer beaches and beautiful green seas in thailand.
The holiday was just 1 big laugh, though. Go and enjoy.
Excellent choice

from Pbryan10What a Hotel!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberMarriot was great
from owltravelsThis hotel has no beach, only a pool area which was very nice. We visited Candolim Beach on most days 250/300 rupees from the roadside taxis. Taxis outside hotel are v expensive but you can charge them to your room. If you visit Candolim beach be sure to walk along the beach towards Calangute til you find FRANNIE'S SHACK. I have been coming to Goa for ten years and this was one of the first on the beach. This is a shack you can trust to eat from with no worries. They have a great chef from Darjeeling so they specialise in Goan and Chinese food. Francis and Marissa the shack owners are honest and kind and everything is spotlessly clean in the kitchen. They use filtered (safe) ice cubes and the food is excellent and cheap. They also do boat trips which are not too long and you will never be ripped off.
The Marriot is a wonderful hotel and cheaper than the other 5 stars because of lack of beach but this was not a problem for us. I would def. stay there again but if travelling on Monarch I would upgrade to premium because it is so cramped. I am told that MYtravel seats are better.
exellant hotel

Top Local Tips for Panaji
Get your new spectacles in Goa During our trip and our previous trips to Goa we have always renewed our eye wear. The opticians we use is Romano's in Panjim where you can get your eyes tested free on state of the art equipment by a qualified optician. They have a fine selection of designer glasses. I purchased 7 pairs on this trip three readers for my wife, for myself 1 set of varey focals, 1 set of prescription sports sungalsses for golf, and two other pair 1 readers and 1 long distance all designer frames. Total cost for all 7 pairs just over £205. There are many opticians in Panjim but Romano's we find give great service. It takes about 4 - 5 days to get your glasses made up. They also do reactolight lenses and contacts. Give them a try you won't be disappointed especially by the price.
buses and shopping Experience the local bus service and you can always come back in a tu tu Panji is only 10 mins on the busShop around for bargains. You can get fake gucci glasses for 250rupies which is around £3 and the thing is they tell you they are fake
Sea Food If you love sea food then go for Simply Fish restaurant in Marriotts. Its awesome.......... Little bit on the higher side price wise but woth it........
