sweeter than the cake

Most travelers tend to give far too much importance to the luxuries that most of these five star hotels offer across the world. But I believe that small gestures are what make a hotel special. Which is why I must share this experience at The Lalit New Delhi. A day after me, my wife and daughter landed in New Delhi and checked into The Lalit New Delhi hotel, it was my wife's birthday. We had had a pretty comfortable 24 hours at the hotel, enjoying the good food and reveling in the comfort that the hotel room had to offer in plenty. But while we were having a quiet dinner I think my daughter may have spoken out aloud about it being my wife's birthday. Just as we had finished dinner, the manager of the restaurant came up to us with a beautifully decorated cake and a bouquet of flowers. We were taken aback. And even more so when he placed the cake on the table, and lighting the candle, offered my wife the flowers. My wife was really touched. When she cut the cake, a number of other staffers at the restaurant joined me and my daughter in clapping. It was very nice and beautiful, I can tell you and our hearts really warmed up for the hotel. We haven't had that kind of treatment anywhere in the world.

The Grand is an ultra-modern high-rise. Rooms are large and well appointed. Service is friendly and efficient. Restaurants are good, the breakfast buffet especially fine. Shops on the mezzanine floors offer quality goods at not unreasonable prices. (I bought a camel-bone, intricately decorated elephant for half what a shop owner first asked.)

Excellent service and attention. Have very nice rooms and cannot forget awesome Indian-international breakfast buffet. Have nice shops, restaurants and lobbies.

Top Local Tips for New Delhi

Book a prepaid taxi at the airport. Ensure that you book a pre paid taxi at the arrivals area at both the International and Domestic terminals when you arrive in Delhi by air. The fare is fixed. Ensure that the taxi has the meter running for all oter journeys in and around Delhi.

Taxi Tips I took a pre-paid taxi from the airport to the hotel in Delhi. Very cheap (about $4US). They add a 'nite tax' to your trip if you arrive after 11PM, so dont let them add it on if you get in before 11PM. Be sure to have the name and address of your hotel written down (and even in Hindi if possible). It was a little scary in the taxi driving on back roads for long periods. The intl airport can be quite far from your hotel. If your driver pulls into a gas station saying "CNG" it means he needs fuel (they generally use compressed natural gas); our driver told us to get out so they can fill the tank (located under the passenger seat). If I had to do it again, I"d pay a little more and hire a driver before hand. Better yet, contact your hotel to see if they can arrange for a driver so you can be sure you get where you're going.

Confused by the Government Shopping Malls - Are they Fake? If you intend to buy handicrafts make sure you know whch malls are government malls before you go. After we'd been to 2 I read in the 'rough guide' that there are some fakes. I only bought scarves so wasn't too concerned but if you intend to make major purchases of rugs, carpets or furniture it might be worth looking into these malls a little deeper before you shop. Either way they are a great experience as you are shown how things are made. The carpet making is fascinating and the fabrics are gorgeous. 6 metres of sahri fabric for £10 - 20.
