Top Local Tips for Mumbai

Airport Arriving or departing during the weekday is awful - allow 2 hours to get to the airport. Consider sending your luggage ahead and getting a first class ticket on the suburban train from Churchgate and an auto at the other end. May be uncomfortable, but certainly quicker.

Elephanta Island and Caves Elephanta island is well worth a visit. The old Hindu temples are impressive - despite the damage done by the Portuguese in colonial times. There are little macaques running around (completely unafraid of humans) and cannon emplacements on the top of the hills. Try to avoid being grabbed by a guide on your entry to the island - you'd do better to make your own way around with a copy of the guidebook (which costs about 75 rupees on the island). Go to the toilet before you go over if possible as the toilet at the island café is quite grim.
