Top Local Tips for Mumbai

Make sure you either agree on a fare or make the driver use the meter On exiting the main train terminal in Mumbai we were approached by a few taxi drivers all offering to take us to wherever we wanted to go. We usually hear the first price then come in Rs100 lower. We settled on Rs150 to take us to our hotel. Later, we took the same route with the meter and it turned out to be Rs26. Always make sure you take a cab using a meter. If drivers are refusing to take you on the meter, walk a bit ad hail a cab by the road. Taxi Drivers are getting into the habit of being lazy all day in the hopes that they can scam a big sale on a small ride. Which means, ultimately that foreign travellers are being taken advantage of and the old school helping hand is being replaced with a few Indian swear words said behind your back when you refuse to jump freely into his cab.

Mumbai Airport Arriving at Mumbai International Airport is a bit daunting. The scene outside the arrival hall can be chaotic, with touts and taxis and hotel drivers all hanging around. There's a pre-pay taxi system that sort-of works, but booking a car in advance with the hotel is the best way (if they show up). Even at 11pm it took over an hour for me to get downtown.
