Top Local Tips for Mumbai
Evening MUST. Do walk along the harbour front up to Chowpatty beach just as the sun is setting. It's breathtaking and comparable to the Hong Kong skyline. It is also worth having sosmething to eat or drink in the Taj Mahal Hotel - the place is luxurious and a real experience.
taxi ask the hotel people to get you a reliable taxi
Monsoon time The best time to visit Inida (at least urban India) is when you can arrange the time to go. Bombay in the monsoon has its own charm and will give you great stories to tell when you get home. Take an umbrella--a big one--and a sense of humor and enjoy!

At the present moment, it's entry looks like that of a nice upper middle class apartment building, which in fact I believe it is. Don't let this non-descript facade disuade you from entering. Ride the old fashioned, attendant operated elevator up to the lobby on the 5th floor and step into its circa early 60's vintage lobby and you'll still have lingering doubts about what the condition of the rooms could possbily be like. Bold traveler, I urge you to continue forward and ask them to show you a room. This is where the reward awaits you.
Ride the elevator down to three, unlock the hallway door and you step into another world. Sleek, clean, modern, polished. I was shown a courtyard facing room with no view. This room was in perfect condition. New Pergo flooring in the spacious high ceiling room for me was a really nice amenity. I'm personally not fond of hotel rooms with wall to wall carpeting; they stink and look beat really fast. Pergo is much easier to keep clean and fresh. It has all the basic needs of a hotel room well met: A/C, ceiling fan, big clean bed, armoire, desk, fridge, safe, phone, good lighting, cable tv.
The clean new look continues right into the bathroom. Where everything is new. I'm not sure if the stone used is marble or granite (maybe both), it is stylishly laid out without being overdone. More importantly though than looking than good, it worked and worked well. Plenty of water pressure and actual hot water!! 24 hrs a day no less. A shower stall with room for two.
A good clean room at a fair price isn't the only thing the Chateau Windsor delivers to its customers. They offer great services at fair prices. The room service is very fast and very reliable. Prices were very reasonable as well. You can pretty much order most anything you might want and they'll get it for you. The laundry service was fast, reliable and again fairly priced.
They still understand the concept that being a good hotel isn't just about providing a clean, comfortable room but also about being of service to its guests. I had a good stumble while walking about Bombay and jammed my foot really hard. I limped back to the Chateau Windsor pretty close to midnight. The concierge insisted on helping me to my room. Once there he filled the bucket with hot water and got epsom salts as well. While I soaked my foot he went and got a deep heating type of ointment to rub on it as well.
The next morning the pain was so overwhelming and persistent I thought about getting my foot x-rayed to find out if I had fractured it.
I went to the front desk to inquire about the location of a hospital. They of course had aleady heard from the night shift about my injury. They set me up with a cab driver who had been carefully instructed to pretty much take me by the hand and lead me through the bureauacracy of getting my foot x-rayed and consulting with a doctor at an Indian hospital. Not an easy thing to do when you are foreigner and in pain. This driver stuck by my side for the several hours this took to complete. Had I tried to do this on my own I'm sure it would have taken much longer to complete and been a frustrating experience as well. The driver was very helpful and persistently aggressive at pushing me through the "system". It was obvious at all points along the way that I was lucky to have him at my side. When it was all over and done and I asked the driver how much he wanted for his services that afternoon, he asked me for 135 rupees which works to to 3 US Dollars. The front desk staff's arrangement for me made my life much easier and that I think is the definition of good service.
The Chateau Windosr gets my thumbs up recomdendation on all points. Great Location. Great Room. Great Service. Great Price.
