Paradise

Utterly beautiful hotel in tranquil surroundings. Meals were fantastic. The staff were the most helpful we've ever known. Lots of activities - birdwatching, boating on the lake (an inland sea), swimming, etc. Couldn't be any better!

Wonderful place!

A beautiful setting: lovely grounds with terrific views of the lake. Friendly staff, great food, lovely bungalow to stay in. The outdoor bathroom was a novelty, having a banana tree growing next to your shower is definitely something to be experienced, although stepping out into the bathroom was awfully hot compared to the air-conditioned room. Got bitten when outdoors, despite repellent - can't have put enough on! I definitely recommend a backwaters cruise - really fascinating and I've never been waved at so much in my life!

Total relaxation

Stayed here for 4 nights on our arrival in India for the first time ever. A very gentle and easy introduction to a different culture with excellent food (buffet style so could easily sample different dishes, including western cuisine for those who can't handle too many spices!) Staff were absolutely charming and helpful. Beautiful pool. Lots of guests were passing through as part of a Kerala tour and some felt they'd have got bored if staying for more than a couple of nights. Great though for total relaxation, bird and boat watching,or if you want to take advantage of the ayurvedic treatments on offer. We had 'mansion' style accommodation..the 'outdoor' bathroom was a delightful experience. Only drawback was that the aircon was noisy...but necessary.

Bliss

An idyllic setting in the middle of a large water body, palm trees, your own air conditioned cottage with dip pool, finger licking food, very good service. All this makes Coconut Lagoon a "must-be-there" destination for anyone going to Kerala.

What a sunset!

from Aquarius1954
Stayed at Coconut Lagoon for just one night as part of a trip to Kerala. Arrived late due to flight delay so was upgraded to a pool villa. This more than made up for missing several hours of our stay. The resort is totally relaxing and the staff very attentive. The villa was extremely clean and spacious and seemed to smell of incense. Robes, slippers and a range of natural toiletries were provided. The only problem we encountered was that the cold water supply dried up on two occasions during our stay. The grounds are stunning and the view of the lake from our verandah was beautiful - what a sunset! We would loved to stayed longer but were booked on a houseboat the next day. Will definitely consider going back for a longer stay.

What a Fantastic Place

Stayed for 2 nights over New Year - fantastic - rooms are superb and the whole hotel is very relaxing. The New Years Eve buffet was fantastic - not really a buffet type of person but the choice of food was fantastic - King Prawns cooked as and when we fancied one!!!!! Drinks a bit expensive but who cares! Will go again but may try to book direct as they offer several hotels in Kerala CGHearth Group

Great, but rough around the edges

We stayed at the Coconut Lagoon in mid-January, and had a good experience. The hotel is pricey, at least in weak American dollars. But as is the case in many of India's tourist spots, you must choose between slightly overpriced and slightly shoddy accommodations, with little in between. Coconut Lagoon fits in the former category.

Your experience at the Coconut Lagoon may vary depending on the type of room. We stayed in a "Heritage Mansion," a very pretty two-story abode adorned in teak. The views of the lake and the garden were beautiful. The bungalows seemed much more humble, though we never saw the inside. We never saw the top-end Pool Villas either. Our room had a beautiful bed in the top story and a gorgeous outdoor private bath (felt like you were showering in a private waterfall in a garden). The feel is rustic, however; there is no TV in the room, and the outdoor bath is less attractive at night, when the lights become an insect magnet. In fact, mosquitoes were the number one problem with our experience. We had to douse ourselves in DEET for every trip outdoors during or after sunset. Also, the rooms had NO MOSQUITO NETS which was unacceptable for an allegedly 5-star hotel. The mosquito coils provided little relief... we spent some nights swatting as much as sleeping. But if you're prepared for this (or are indifferent to mosquito bites), it's not a problem.

The service of the staff (with the exception of one surly guy at the front desk) was outstanding. There are also plenty of activities (yoga, massages, classical music instruction, night cruises) to keep you occuppied. The grounds/gardens are very pretty, and the pool is pretty amazing. Food at the breakfast and dinner buffets was very good, with Kerala, north Indian, and some continental specialties.

Keep in mind that an Ayurvedic massage requires the recipient to be NAKED for extended periods of time in the presence of a same-sex masseur/masseuse.... the looks of shock on some of the guests suggested they didn't know this.

All in all, this is a four-star hotel with a rustic/natural feel. It may not be as commercial, westernized, or polished as others, but it is unique and charming.

Loved it

Was at Coconut Lagoon at end of december. Was wonderful, The rooms and food were really good and the ayurvedic spa well worth the visit. Good for a relaxing getaway.

Mixed feelings

from ghf
My husband and I stayed in Coconut Lagoon during our trip around Kerala in December 2005. Although it was the most expensive place we stayed, I would have to say it was my least favourite.

Although it is undeniably beautiful and well-kept, there is something very stuffy about it. The service is almost too exact for India and prevented us from feeling relaxed. Many of the guests were snobbish and rude to the staff which made us feel very uncomfortable. There were also a lot of children around - many of whom were not prevented from running around the restaurant during dinner or screaming in the pool.

The restaurant food was served in buffet-style (although there is also an a la carte seafood restaurant) and was pleasant without being great and was extremely overpriced.

On the plus side, the resort organises a huge amount of activities. We did not take advantage of these as we had come to the resort to relax (which was almost impossible!) after two hectic weeks touring Kerala, but I imagine this would be a godsend for families.

We stayed in one of the Heritage Bungalows which was very nice, if a little dark, and had a huge comfortable bed. The outdoor bathroom was also a treat - though you could clearly hear the people in the neighbouring bathrooms. If you do come here, make sure you ask for a unit with a lake view - there are a lot of cottages and many of them have no view beyond the other cottages which are very close together.

It wasn't awful but there are a lot better places to stay in Kerala for much less money.
