Top Local Tips for Jaipur
What to do apart from sightseeing For a good coffee or hot chocolate in Jaipur go to "Barista's". Spend a nice evening at the ethnic village "Chokhi Dhani", about half an hours drive from Jaipur: They have all kinds of little artistic shows, music and dancing. You can try out a short elephant or camel ride, just long enough to see how it feels up there. The entrance fee includes a huge vegeterian buffet with many local dishes. Interesting and tasty - we had no stomach aches afterwards. But we bought bottled water. Ideal with children. For shopping go to "Anokhi" - they have lovely clothes, linens and other cloth-things. (They have outlets elsewhere, too, like Jodhpur and Delhi).
Time on your hands A visit to the Jasntar Mantar (not sure of spelling) is a must in Jaipur. There are other 'observatories' in other Indian cities but this is the best. You need a guide to explain all the details to you but it is also worth taking time to just wander around and enjoy the shapes.
Shopping excitement There were several auto-rickshaw drivers (Sam & Max come to mind) who were keen to take us on shopping tours. These were generally successful; however, be careful as they may have agendas. You could negotiate five hours or so (with them waiting between destinations) for R400; pretty cheap in the scheme of things.
