Value For Money - Delighted!

Just returned from 14 night stay at Prainha - allocated on arrival and having read the previous review felt we needed to give our point of view. We were both delighted with the hotel especially as some of the others we saw on the transfer coach looked very iffy!. It is a 2 star hotel in a very quiet area of Dona Paula which is under new management and things are being changed. The new owners are trying to upgrade the hotel rooms and restaurant area etc and this will make a difference for next years visitors. The hotel grounds are lovely especially around the pool area.
Yes the service in the restaurant is not up to standard but as we said earlier this was being addressed while we were there. We stayed in the Annex rooms which were air conditioned (these were through Thomsons) not a brilliant view but is in process of being changed.
We met a lot of return visitors at the hotel so it can't be just us who loved our stay there. We reckon we did really well for our money and are going to book this hotel next year as are three other couples we met there. If you want a peaceful relaxing break with wonderful weather no loud disco music keeping you awake at night and are not expecting 4 star facilities then we would say it is real value for money and to give it a try!

I thought I had researched our Goa holiday very thoroughly and for our third week made a direct booking with Prainha cottages. What a mistake!!! all the reviews I had read were at least a year old and favourable BUT things have changed! The complex has been sold to an Indian entrepreneur who has done a deal with Thomson holidays. The manager was the most rude, obnoxious man I have ever met and all the staff were sullen, timid and clearly intimidated by him. The rooms were not good - vaulted ceilings with lots of gaps meant that insects were dropping on us from a great height all night. The food in the restaurant was very poor indeed and I managed to pick up my first indian "tummy bug" here. The beach was dirty and you certainly wouldn't want to swim in the sea - it looked vile. Clearly this hotel has been "packaged" leading to falling standards and everything - food, service, quality being pared right down to the bone. We checked out after one night and with great relief moved on. January 06.

Have stayed here many times over the years and cannot fault the staff quality and quality of food. Have been made to feel like one of the family.

Top Local Tips for Dona Paula

Dont under any circumstances let anyone help you with your bag when you arrive Many guys tried to grab my bag to 'help' me to the bus but I only had £sterling so I didnt want to tip and eventally some guy came over and said that he was with the company ( he literally lifted my bag from the floor to the bus. I was already at the bus so didnt expect to give a tip and told him I had no money but he insisted I give him some so I gave him a £1, he wasn't happy about this but I really had nothing else apart from notes. I gave money to other poor people in India and tipped for most small services whilst in India and many of the hotel so it is not the giving that I mind as its only £1 just the fact that he did almost nothing and yet expected payment and then more!
