Cochin or backwaters first? If you want to do a backwaters overnight (or more days/nights), I would advise that you do that first and then spend a day or two in Cochin - the other way around can be tricky because of the traffic and distance. The airport is small and efficient, but it's a good 40-45 minutes from the Fort Cochin area, and at least 2 hours from Allepey (most hotels will say hour and a half - don't believe it!). Also bear in mind that for internal flights you need to check in at leat 90 minutes prior to departure, and for international flights at least 2 hours.

Eating out Try eating places around the chinese fishing nets. Great value and fantastic seafood. Also special tea (beer served in mugs as they don't have licences).
