Stale Smell

It's a roof over your head, but going to sleep in Mars beds isn't exactly a nice experience. I've been to this hotel several times in several years because I didn't know any other to arrive to in the middle of the night in Chennai, and every year again, the sheets on the beds smell awful! And the sheets are too small as well: you can either cover your feet, or your shoulders, but not both. This year, I'm definitely going somewhere else!! One year, when we arrived in the breakfast room, the staff was quickly painting over the humidity spots on the walls and ceiling... Friendly perhaps, but it meant we had to have breakfast in a room filled with the smell of paint.

Worst slum Hotel ever

We stayed in Hotel Mars for 1 night in Jan 2006 after hours of exhausting air travel. To start with the hotel airport pickup made us wait 40 min in the middle of the night for being picked up. The Hotel is located in Pallavaram a few kilometers from the airport on shabby side street.
On arrival at 1 am, we we're shown the worst rooms I've ever seen in my life, complete with dirty bedding, scores of mosquitoes and cockroaches on the floor, running for their hiding places as you turned on the lights. Molds were growing on the walls and the ceiling. It seemed as if the room had been soaked during the rains, fortunately it wasn't raining at the time. The beds we're supported by a bricks where their legs had collapsed.
On breakfast we had to repeat our order as the waiter maid no notes and apparently had forgotten half of our order after taking orders from other customers.
Only good thing about the place is that you'll be so happy to leave that waking up for an early flight won't be a problem.

Bargain....and then bargain some more The rickshaws and taxis (call taxi including ) will take you on a ride. The meters are always rigged. It is better to ask a friend how much it should cost for the distance you want to travel. Then bargain till you get the right price. If you are not pressed for time then it can be a very fun thing to do as well
