I am a software engineer living in USA. I came to Chennai in Oct 2007 and stayed here for 10 days. The service was excellent and the food was awsome. The rooms are very good and more than everything the ambiance of the hotel was mindblowing. After my stay here I have decided to stay in Kanch whenever I come to Chennai.
Bad Staff

I made a hotel booking in Kanchi through phone for my stay in Chennai. I was confirmed of a reservation by the hotel staff. But no reference numbers were provided during the telephone conversation. When I reached the hotel after flying long hours to chennai, I found that there was no reservation in my name. Adding to my anger, the hotel staff/managers responded very badly and refused to beleive that I made a reservation through phone. I had to finally leave that place in disgrace.
Hope this review was useful to travellers trying to make a reservation through phone in Kanchi.

When i enquired whether they had any rooms they asked for twice as much as was advertised on the website (1500r). Eventually after staing this the price came down to 1000r "special price for you" which after being travelling for 24hours and not used to the heat/noise/crowds i accepted as the price of a nights sleep.
The room itself was cleanish, although hadn't been updated for 30 years, there was no shower just a bucket and a tap of lukewarm water, the air con didn't seem to work there was just a rather nosiy fan, the TV was broke as well.
The following morning i needed to book a coach trip down south, which to the staffs credit they did for me although the price of the ticket seemed to go up everytime i asked if they'd managed to book it yet (started at 350r final price 650r).
I left the following morning, although firstly money was demanded off me by the hotel security guard, i gave him 30r to get rid of him i just wanted to go, secondly i was followed to my rickshaw by several of the staff who reacted angrily when i smiled and waved goodbye, presumably they were also after some sort of tip.
So all in all not a place i'd go back to although its location was central (5 mins to Spencer's plaza) and it was resonably safe. I just felt the staff has eyed me up as a naive westerner and were trying to take my money at every oppurtunity and the room was also below standard in my opinion.
Avoid if at all possible.
