Historical Traveller Reviews of Hyatt Regency Kolkata Hotel

At times great - at times not so great!

from Sunni07
We have just returned from a 10 day part business, part leisure stay in the Hyatt Regency in Kolkata, and have overall all had a very pleasant stay.
We were there with our 2 young boys, 2 years and 10 months, and the although primarily a business hotel, the staff were very attentive, friendly and hospitable to the children.
The first impression of the hotel is that is very impressive from outside, and the reception area is in line with the hotels 5* rating.
The staff behind the front desk were very cold, and they should maybe take some lessons in friendliness from the rest of the staff.
The room we had was a standard double, and they were quick to bring in a cot for the baby. The room is very comfortable, modern and we had a fantastic view of the pool.
The 3 restaurants at the hotel are all very different. The Waterside cafe, the hotels main restaurant, served an excellent buffet breakfast, with a huge choice of both indian and european food.
The North Indian restaurant, Gucchi, is very good, if a little too formal. The Italian restaurant, La Cuccina, was a huge disappointment. Although there was no one else in the restaurant, the staff were very slow, and almost lazy in attitude, and did not feel welcoming. The Waterside cafe was definately the best of the 3.
The restaurants are also very expensive, and we soon realised that we could dine out in the city at much better restaurants at a fraction of the cost.
The pool and gym are both of a high quality. The pool staff are very attentive, and again were great with the children.
Overall, this is a very good quality hotel, and probably one of the best in Kolkata, however, there is room for improvement.

Great Business Hotel

from Ollscoil
First time to stay in this hotel despite having visited Kolkata 10 times over the past 2.5 years. This is definitely the best of all hotels I have stayed in at the city (previously stayed at Park, Oberoi, Taj Bengal, Sonar Bangla). My most frequented hotel would have been the Sonar Bangla, but the service at this hotel has deteriorated significantly in the short number of years it has been open (complacency due to high occupancy?).

No problems with airport pick up. Polite and efficient. Check-in slightly longer than would have expected, but pleasant staff. Booked a room on the club floor. Slick, clean, modern design (exactly what I like). Impressive bathroom. Good in-room internet connection. Large flat screen TV. Plenty of powerpoints.

Had in-room dining breakfast. Pretty standard. Forgot my toast, no spoon for cereal, and no tomato ketchup for hot breakfast (little things, but annoying when you're in a rush to get to a meeting).

Good concierge, car arranged to bring into town quickly. Had a very pleasant and chatty driver bring me back to the airport (filled me in with great detail about the great working environment of the hotel and how well Hyatt looks after its employees...tried not to be too cynical!).

Located 30 minutes outside of city (dependant on renowned Kolkata traffic), though would never stay at any of the town centre hotels (due to past experiences).

Impressive healthclub - great gym.

Didn't get chance to try out restaurants, but looking forward to next time when I stay here again. Definitely beats the Sonar Bangla.

Excellent hotel

We chose this hotel simply because it was the nearest to the airport, and we were arriving very late in Kolkata and leaving again the next day.
We were very impressed with all aspects of our stay, from our pick-up at the airport right through to check-out. Even though we checked in in the middle of the night, there were plenty of staff to assist us, and they were all very attentive, polite and helpful. We had booked connecting rooms for us and our three children and on arrival found we had been given a suite, which was marvellous.
The rooms were spacious, very modern, smart and clean and the bathrooms were huge and fab!
The only food we had was the breakfast buffet and it was very good indeed - and, living in Asia, we have seen an awful lot of breakfast buffets!
I would highly recommend this hotel if you need to stay near the airport, or want to avoid the bustle of down-town Kolkata. It only took about 30 mins to get to the airport in the middle of the day.

Not a good hotel if you work 2nd or 3rd shift

from clasicgrl
I stayed here for 3 weeks in Sept 06 on a business trip and was less than impressed. The room was nice and the bathroom very very modern. But I have to agree with another reviewer that the storage space in the closet was very lacking. There was only enough drawer space for undergarments and socks. Everything else had to be hung up. A much brighter note was the laundry service. It was excellent and was almost always returned before the requested time.

The biggest problem I had with this hotel is that it did not cater very well to people working non-standard hours. While I was there, I was working usually until 2-3AM. I am sad to say that the room service was very limited at this time (I could not even get naan) and the housekeeping staff was not very good at accommodating my schedule. They also did not have OJ which I thought was very strange. The staff was also very uneven about picking up the room service. They would ask when I wanted them to come back and pick up the food. I would usually tell them 1 hour and they would never show up. I always had to call, sometimes more than once, to have them pick up the food. This is not a big deal I know but for a hotel that bills itself as 4-star I should not have had to call multiple times.

I am returning to Kolkata in a few months and even though the Hyatt is only a 5 minute drive from the office I am going to try and stay at the Oberoi. I ate at the Thai restaurant and it was amazing.

Very comfortable, but choose room carefully...

I stayed here for 9 nights on a business trip. It is well located for the Salt Lake City area, but about 25/30 minutes plus travelling time to downtown Kolkata depending on the traffic, which can often be bad. There are no restaurants or shops outside the hotel, although the "City Centre" shopping/ leisure area is not too far by taxi.

The hotel is large and impressive as you approach. The huge atrium reception (more of that later) is smart, and below you can view the cafe, which is used all day for meals.

The check in process was reasonably efficient, but my request for a quiet room, which is recorded in my Hyatt loyalty membership records, was not met. My room was on the 3rd floor, overlooking the atrium. Music and other noises from the reception and restaurant were very audible, which was not great after a very long journey via Delhi, jet lag and long business days. I moved after 2 nights and would strongly recommend rooms in the wings, which are away from the atrium, or alternatively, a room on a high floor.

The standard room was of a good size and comfortable with efficient air conditioing. There is an impressive bathroom. It has a bath and a "rain shower" separate shower. There is a little style over practicality as there is no plug for the sink.

There is, also, very little storage space for clothes, apart from the hanging area. Not good when you are staying for more than a few days.

I had breakfast daily and the evening buffet on one occasion in the cafe restaurant. Good quality food, great choice, but limited No Smoking areas, which can be annoying, as many guests of all nationalities smoked.

I used the Italian restaurant once. Very good food, but as usual, care is needed when ordering from the imported wine list.

The outdoor pool is pleasant, as are the spa facilities. Although not large, the saunas and spa pool are good for relaxing. There are different treatments on offer, which I would certainly try on a future visit. I did not use the gym, but it looked satisfactory.

Staff are usually helpful and polite, and I only had one instance of bad service.

Other reviews have mentioned the Oberoi, and it is a great hotel. Still, depending on your requirements for your Kolkata visit, the Hyatt Regency is a comfortable and very good hotel, and useful if you are working in that part of this huge City.

Very nice hotel

from noonie
Having arrived very late at night I was pleased with the speed of check-in (Club Floor) and the size / opulence of the room allocated.

Service throughout my stay (5 days) was excellent with everyone very helpful and the overall facilities superb. Cleanliness and attention to detail was evident throughout and I really cannot fault the place.

I would single-out the Indian and Italian restaurants for particular praise - the were very very good and not crazily priced.

I can understand some of the comments about the fact that some of the gym equipment not being "latest model" but they all worked well and seemed in a good state of repair, albeit the air conditioning was not very effective.

I would thouroughly recommend this place but if you want more traditional styles go for the Oberoi as this place could be anywhere in the world. Interestingly, Ritz Carlton are believed to be locating very close to the golf courses in the next year or so...

Not up to Hyatt Standard

from j889814672
Stayed at the hotel for a one night business trip. Hotel failed to pick me up at the airport which was a bad start. When I got to the hotel, I arrived at the same time as another club floor guest. We were told to check in at the club floor and the other guest went first. It took 20 minutes to check him in, and then another 20 minutes for myself. Way too long. Was awakened 3 times during the night due to noise in adjacent room and hallways. Could hear conversation in next room very clearly... obviously no sound insulation used. Gym has cheap and ergonomically unsound "Technogym" equipment. Ellipticals are unusable. Some treadmills have loose belts. Gym had no a/c the morning I used it... sweltering hot!

Club floor rate includes breakfast but breakfast has very few offerings... not really worth paying extra for the club floor.

I'd recommend the Taj over this hotel for a stay in Kolkata.

Slighly less impressive

Stayed at this hotel again in January 2006 after 8 months (see my Tripadvisor review from April 2005). The deterioration is evident - especially in relation to upkeep and cleanliness. It is still good, bit minor things like chipped paint, carpet stains, missing grout in bathroom etc. are evident. Housekeeping service was poor on the one occasion I requested it - a one hour delay and two reminder phone calls! Other aspects of this hotel are still very good or excellent: food, comfort, location is OK, decor. To my mind, it has slipped a star.

I stayed for just one night in October, truly professional staff (love it when people remember your name) Large room with fantastic marble bathroom. Very quiet room house keeping / turn down excellent New Gym (Club Prana) Great wines available in the Italian Restaurant and Maybe the best Tandoori room service ever! I will be back. This is a superb hotel.

Good hotel

from vindoc2000
Extremely good hotel. The check in was a breeze, the rooms were impeccable, with attention to detail. The staff were very courteous and helpful. The buisiness suite and the travel desk were run by excellent people. The food and room service was very good. Definitely five stars.

Top Local Tips for Calcutta

Remember to include airport pick up and drop when you book I found from my many trips to India that it reduces your stress levels substantially if you have an airconditioned car with a driver who speaks English pick you up from the airport. They usually carry cold bottled water which is a bonus specially during hot weather.

Aptly rated Calcutta... Although, I don't believe in recent times Calcutta was ever overrated (you rarely here anything good about only usually hear about it's abject poverty), there's really not much to see in Calcutta. The Victoria Memorial is nice and the Howrah bridge which really has been one of Calcutta's claim to fame, is probably overrated. The dinner we had in Calcutta was the worst Indian food I've ever had in India (and I've travelled extensively throughout India). Although it's probably not fair to judge after just one meal, I've heard from other Indians that Bengali food is probably their least favorite regional Indian food.

Good restaurant in Kolkata Hyatt They have excellent Italian Restaurant. And they prerpare good wines.
