Recently I took my family for Taj visit. I was bit worried on accomodation since I have 1.5 years old daughter with me. Finally I trusted on Hotel Yamuna View (formally Hotel Ashok Agra) due to their old reputation. The hotel is conveniently located on the station road.. Rooms are clean and big (but no high end interiors)... One can find all the required acceseries... and mini bar in hotel room.

They have two resturants Shalimar and Madarian serving Indian and Chinese cuisines. Both are well decorated and staffs are also well behaved. We really relished the Chinese food and morning breakfast.

One can find old telephone set and old bathroom fittings in the hotel room. Though shampoo/ bubble bath were missing from the room...

Costs We live in India, so we know how much things should cost. Everything about Agra was expensive, from the hotel rooms to food and general shopping. Huge unwillingness to bargain, it was hard work. We felt completely ripped off with the car/driver/guide rental company. Even though we did manage to shave quite a lot off his final bill, it was still an enormous sum of money to pay for not quite 2 days. Outfit was called Agra Tours and Travels - would not recommend them solely due to his attitude. Much the same experience with buying carpets, very difficult to bargain.

Touring Agra We somehow missed the memo on what you can and cannot bring onto the premises of the Taj Mahal. Do not bring a book of any kind, not even your tour or guide books, they will be confiscated or must be left at the entry gate and retrieved later. They do not want people lounging around the grounds reading. Our tour guide was wonderful. Tour guides in Agra are supposed to be licensed so your's should have a license they wear on a halyard around their necks. They study the sites and history and are tested on their knowlegde. The Red Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb (the baby Taj) are worth seeing in addition to the Taj Mahal. The city is a hell-hole. There is nothing charming and no place we found that tourists can walk around. Once you are dropped at your hotel you are pretty much confined there until you are picked up by your driver the next morning or arrange a taxi. If you try to wander outside your hotel compound you will be besieged by aggressive rickshaw and autotaxi drivers.
