Top Local Tips for Agra

Viewings Always go into the room to look at the room you are going to stay in before booking. Barter with them on the price you want. If you don't get it walk out of the hotel and find somewhere else. Eventually they will come down in price rather than lose your custom. Especially so in this economic climate. Definitely do not pay up front for a hotel before you stay there....

Touts & Pedlars Beware of them preferably don't buy anything -once you buy you are beseiged

Fatehpur Sikri Go to Sikri only - and a tour guide is well worth it. Sikri is the old palace of Akbar and is well worth a wander after your guide finishes his tour. Despite any urges from the guide, do not bother with Fatehpur, which is the burial place of the Sufi saint Salim Chisti - the experience is just not worth the hassle you get as soon as you step outside the safe, hawker-free confines of Sikri. Even within the walls of the religious building, hawkers and peddlers will hassle you no end - which for a religious place, leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Stay well away.
