Screaming Babies in the Hallway

Second choice during my stay in Agra. Hotel itself is fairly dismal, small room with almost no space to move, minimally clean, storage rooms off stairwell let you see how unclean the hotel is so don't peek. On the 'up' side, the staff were incredible, very helpful and attentive. Had a woman with a screaming baby pacing the hallways all night - eventually had to go tell her to go back in her room (fortunately I knew enough Hindi). The one thing that made this hotel nice was the Cafe Coffee Day downstairs. Nice addition!

We selected the Amar Yatri Niwas because of positive reviews in Rough Guide and Lonely Planet. The hotel is nice enough itself, though rather overpriced for what it is compared to other places we stayed in India. The restaurant is rather bleak and best suited only to a quick breakfast. Having Pizza Hut next door was a blessing. We would not stay again, however, because of the high noise level from a very busy road immediately in front of the hotel, compounded by hotel staff, we think, talking loudly outside in the middle of the night. And this in January when windows were closed due to the cool nights. There have to be better choices.

Top Local Tips for Agra

One way auto rickshaws All the auto rickshaw drivers will try to latch on to you for the whole day and take you to shops you don't want to go to. To avoid this, just hire them one way. No waiting while you're inside the Taj for example. Slightly more expensive (i.e. a few cents) but well worth it to avoid the hassle and arguing.
