Top Local Tips for Papeete
Le Trucks These are the equivalent to our buses, and unless you know french and know what route its taking you are probably better of getting a taxi.
Tahiti shopping and eating If you need something before you go to the other islands and you see it here, buy it, because there is not much in the way of goods and services on the islands. Also, I saw something I liked on Papeete and thought I could purchase on the way home. Wrong! Everything closes on Sunday and there were 2 holidays in the 2 weeks I was here, it was as locked up as Christmas or Thanksgiving in the states. Add to this closing at 5 p.m. sharp weekdays and closing early on Sat. and maybe closing for lunch! Also, be sure to eat your breakfast and lunch, because you can't get dinner much before 6:30 or 7 p.m., even if you are dying of hunger!
Marche de Papeete The Marche is a great place to buy souvenirs and by visiting there before my cruise I then returned there after to do my shopping as it was much cheaper than any of the other islands and also particularly the souvenir shops in Papeete. From pearls to postcards, everything is available at the stalls on the upper level of the Marche and a lot of time can be spent just browsing around and I found the staff in all the stores extremely helpful and courteous.
