Great staff, yummy food

The hotel was pretty full when we were there, yet everyone still knew our name. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Need a ride to town? They grab a driver and get you there. We stayed for 4 nights in a Honeymoon Bure with the honeymoon package. We then went to Savusavu for a week, so it was interesting to compare islands and resorts. Taveuni seemed very isolated, but it was gorgeous. We wanted to go to town to buy some local handicrafts...there was one store with a backroom...and it had $300 wood bowls! Things were really expensive, so we just had to get used to that. And that was about it -- very small "town", really nothing there. But that's why you come to Fiji, right? We went on several tours, including the Bouma Waterfalls, which were really cool. Niu was our guide and was great. Unfortunately, it rained practically our entire 11 days in Fiji (due to weather in Asia), so that put a damper on things. And at Maravu, there was really nothing to do when it was raining. They had about 4 really old board games, and that's it. But that's Fiji -- on the islands were visited, we found whatever you want to do, hopefully you can find it at your resort. We also had a guided snorkeling adventure, which was great. Our guide would dive down and pick things up and let us touch it; he'd point things out. It was great fun and we came back with a great little clam shell.

There were also afternoon free demonstrations on things like the use of coconuts, medicinal uses from plants, etc. The teacher was great - it was interesting and laid back.

The beach...well, the beach isn't great. We had some great bbq lunches there, but it's really NOTHING to speak of. Not only is it rocky, like it is in many places in Fiji (bring water shoes), but the lounge chairs and such are old and crappy. Our favorite thing about the beach was the old yellow Lab that would sit by us. You could also grab kayaks and have a little adventure, which was fun.

Highs: The food was great. Fresh and well-prepared. I did feel although the menus were different every day, the variety wasn't as big as it could have been (it was nothing compared to our next resort). We were there 4 days, and I felt like I ate the same thing several times. For example, we had 2 beach barbeques and they served the same thing. But overall, it was good. The breakfast buffet was the same everyday, and didn't have the largest selection.

Staff is great. Incredibly friendly and helpful. We also had a massage which was very nice and pretty reasonable.

Downside: no drinks are included. I mean, no Cokes or anything. We got fresh juice in the morning, but that's it. I can understand if they don't want to include alcoholic beverages, but non-alcoholic should be included for the price we paid.

Our Honeymoon Bure was okay. It's a private, free-standing house which was plenty big with a huge deck and a partial ocean view. However, the bug problem was so bad, we never wanted to hang out outside. There were wasp nests at several bures, and we weren't ever given bug spray or wasp killer (there were coils you could burn, but that was it).

Also, we had a jacuzzi in our back patio. I read other reviews that said theirs was heated...ours was not. We let it heat up with the "eco heat" for 3 hours and it was still ice cold. And when it's cooler and raining, that's not great. So we never used it, and that's a big reason we booked the room. Outdoor shower was okay, and we would have used it more had the weather been nicer. The bathroom inside was okay. Water pooled up in the shower and it never seemed really clean. But the rest of the bure was clean, and they leave gorgeous fresh flowers everywhere.

Also - they charge for all the tours. I mean, it's $40 to take you to church on Sunday! We felt everything was really nickel and dimed. We can understand charging for the big tours, but this seemed steep.

Overall, we felt we paid way too much for what we got. It was a nice place, but you could get sooo much nicer in the states or elsewhere for the price you pay here. But honestly, we found the same thing across Fiji -- it's expensive, but the views are worth it. It was great for our honeymoon, but nowhere we'll be returning anytime soon for the money. We could go to Hawaii for a portion of the cost and stay somewhere nicer...but then again, the staff wouldn't know our name from Adam. We left and spent 7 days at Namale Resort in Savusavu - you can see our review there if you're interested.

Amazing wedding experience at Maravu

My husband and I just returned from our wedding/honeymoon in Fiji. We were married on the hilltop at Maravu Plantation Resort -- and it was the most amazing experience! Because the reort is amll, we were able to meet a bunch of very fun and interesting guests. The staff are so very gracious. We LOVED our Honemoon Deluxe Suite bure - especially the plunge pool (perfectly heated for the tropical climate), outdoor shower, and hammock. We went on several tours as well as utilized the spa services - all of which were incredible.

We decided for our honeymoon to do a trip around the world, which included stays in Hong Kong and New Zealand. To finish our trip we decided to stay in Fiji, and couldn't believe how lucky we were to have stayed at the Maravu Plantation Resort on Taveuni Island (we did the honeymoon package). We stayed here for 7 nights, and when it was time to leave we really didn't want to go. We were made to feel so welcome and as soon as we arrived we were greeted with the biggest of smiles and warmest of hearts. The staff are just so friendly and helpful, and nothing is too much bother. Our bure was furnished beautifully, and we really had a great deal of privacy. Our first afternoon was spent in our private jacuzzi, drinking champagne - what can beat that. The food was amazing, and the menu was varied each day - the sea food was just delicious. We also had a couple of days where there were bbqs on the private beach, which were great fun, and if you're feeling active afterwards, the chance to play volleyball. We also spent an evening on the hilltop, drinking cocktails watching the beautiful sunset. There were plenty of good trips available, and we would recommend the trip to the waterfalls (a tiring walk but rewarded at the end by a cool swim in beautiful surroundings), and the snorkelling trip where we lucky enough to have been accompanied by dolphins. Maravu Planation Resort was fantastic, and we cannot think of a better way to spend a honeymoon.

Great Staff/Great Relaxation

This resort is small and intimate. The staff all know you by name. The bures are clean and wonderful. The beach is small, but private and well kept. They are very accomodating to their guests and you will genuinely feel they care about you. The small setting means you get to know others at the resort. A great place for weddings and vow renewals. We loved this place and would definitely go back

Wonderful Stay at Maravu Plantation

Staying at Maravu Plantation was all that we had expected and more...
My wife and I had the pleasure of spending our honeymoon with everyone at Maravu. The facilities are absolutely wonderful, from the fantastic Honeymoon Bure down to every amenity. The staf are some of the friendliest most helpful people that we have ever had the pleasure to meet. The tours of Taveuni were also wonderfully given.
We definately plan to visit Maravu again.

Maravu is So wonderful!

My husband and I traveled to Maravu two years in a row, in 2000 and 2001. On our first trip we brought our son, who turned 14 while we were there and was cooked a delicious special cake for the occasion. The next year, our daughter came with us too, as she'd heard such glowing reports from our first trip that she wanted to experience it too! (she was 19 at the time). Both trips were simply fantastic! From the moment we were graciously picked up at the grass airport strip, and arrived to the staff singing a hello, to the moment we had to say good bye, we were enthralled with this fabulous resort. We've traveled to many resorts (three countries in Africa, Iceland, Belize, Costa Rica, Yucatan, India) and we agree that Maravu is one of our favorites. The pace is gentle and relaxing, but we were never wishing for more activities. We loved hiking up to a spectacular waterfall, and jumping in its pool; we took photos in front of the 180 meridian signpost; we slid down rocky waterslides and kayaked to "honeymoon island." Our favorite trip was to a local village, where we learned all about the communal living on Fiji ... the REAL Fiji. And we fell in love with the staff, who always had a cheerful "Bula, Cynthia and Jim!" whenever they saw us. They were very solicitous of our every need, and paid especial attention to our children, to make sure they were feeling at home. We truly loved getting massages and swimming in the little pool; swaying in the hammock outside our gorgeous bure (or hut). And, the two most amazing points I've saved for last. First, the food was superlative. It was terrifically abundant and delicious! My daughter and I are vegetarians, and we were offered our own special dishes for every meal, which I am still dreaming about! And the boys said that their food was just as wonderful. Finally, nearly every evening we were regaled with guitar and singing by the "Maravu Band Boys" while we drank ceremonial kava ... an intimate and moving way to end the day. We will be back!!

Love at First Sight

The love of my life said it would be an adventure. From the moment I visited the website for Maravu, I was hooked. My husband and I were blessed abundantly with a 20 day honeymoon at this breathtaking "home" in June, 2004. Words cannot truly express the warmth and friendly demeanor of every person we encountered. The resort itself is quite exceptional. No detail was overlooked. The atmosphere of the resort, as well as the entire island of Taveuni, was simply breathtaking. Each evening, following a day filled with different adventures, we lounged in our private hammock, awaiting the soft sound of the drums signifying the cocktail and dinner hour. Gathering around the openair bar, sipping Tracy's, Lita's or Chukie's drink special, sampling exquisite appetizers. and interacting with the staff and other guests are among some of the most memorable times of my life. Each meal was prepared to perfection. I found the beach barbecues very inviting. Not only was the food exceptional, the opportunity to interact with the staff, playing beach volleyball, singing, and hearing the ring of genuine laughter fill the air truly touched me. I have to say that the most unique and moving attribute of our trip was the personality of each islander. Everywhere I turned someone was laughing or waving, calling "Bula!!" with award winning smiles. I am a people lover and I repeatedly commented that I have never met such beautiful people. They touched my soul. As for the accomodations, the honeymoon burres were very private and romantic with the rock enclosed jacuzzi and outdoor showers-perfect for relaxing in the evening, gazing heavenward toward the awesome display of stars, palm trees swaying in the breeze, listening to the incredible tunes of the Resorts own Maravu Band Boys. The general population of guests we encountered were newlyweds, but there were several families visiting as well. I heard no negative comments from anyone at all. The staff cared for everyone as if we were family, and for that matter we formed friendships from all over the world. Each couple there agreed that we would all return to Maravu in the future for a reunion.
I anxiously await revisiting with the dear souls who touched mine in a way that will never be forgotten. My frequent comment while in Fiji was "If a person comes here and doesn't witness God's miracles in the people and environment, he never will." We have shared our 700+ photos and our lovestory to everyone we can and strongly recommended Maravu for their next journey. Truly amazing!!!Kudos!!!

Wonderful Stay for our Honeymoon

We stayed at the Maravu Plantation Resort for our honeymoon last summer and had the most wonderful time. The staff was gracious and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. The grounds and our bures were absolutely beautiful and well kept. The food was outstanding and the activities were constantly changing, so we were always experiencing something new. We would highly recommend Maravu for a honeymoon or any other vacation. It especially caters to couples, though kids are welcome.

Honeymoon Dream Come True

Your land of paradise was our dream come true from the moment we landed. Friendly faces and smiles. The plantation was so breath taking we couldn't stop taking pictures and the food was so delicious and well prepared we couldn't believe we were on a secluded island.
The activities and excursions were first time experiences and will last a lifetime. We felt spoiled yet the hospitality was so geniune it felt comfortable and like home. Our only regret was that we only planned half of our time in Fiji at Maravu and went to another resort that made us feel like Castaways. We dream of coming back daily, your in our hearts forever. We purchased two of your CD's and have one in the house and the other in our vehicle so we can reflect back on our greatest vacation ever and escape from the ever changing rushed and disrespectful world as we know and live in daily. We wll be back some day this we promise and it will be a joyful and content day when we arrive. Thanks for making our dreams come true at Maravu. We decorated our bedroom with the islands features so we will always have that feeling. A DREAM vacation

Bula!!! Everybody, at Maravu Resort,

I want to start by saying I miss you all! The country, the water, the food, everything! My husband, and I had the most awesome time for our
honeymoon. I went home saying to everybody that, number one: The People were unbelieveable! They made such an impression on me, that I want to name our future children Fijian(?) names! Latte(?) and Setoki(?).
You guys made us feel like royality! It was the best part of the trip! The whole experience was magical, we flew for ten hours to get to the main island, then flew another hour and a half to Taveuni Island, we felt we were going to another world. Our room was amazing, the resort is gorgeous, the activities were adventurous and exciting. The island was breathtaking, with the waterfalls, cliffs, rainforest, villages, the water (the bugs situation, wasn't bad at all. Insect repelent and your fine!). The food was unbelievable! We had gourmet food, 3 times a day, 3 course meals and every meal was different ( we were there for nine nights and ten days ), plus every dinner was by candle light with the house band playing! Oh! and don't let me forget about the Frogs, they would come out at night. The stars were so close it was like you can touch them (there's barely any electricity on the island, that's what I also loved about my trip!). I want to end by saying, that we fortunately got to meet the owner! Awesome German man with the same heart and personality as the Fijians(?)! . Thank you, sooooo much for the most magical Dream vacation!

Top Local Tips for Taveuni Island

Bouma National Park something you don't expect to find in Fiji....endless waterfalls, dense jungle, all kind of endemic birds, reef park. not to be missed!

Maravu Plantation Go in October to January as that is the summer months for Fiji. Waether was fantastic in October and November. Not too hot and no way even cold and no bugs! We had heard night mare stories of Bugs but we had no problem at all in October and November! Temp was always around 80 at that time as well.

Domestic Flight to Taveuni Make sure you have your camera ready as the domestic flight to Taveuni passes over many beautiful coral reefs and has magnificent views of Taveuni and other islands along the way.
