Top Local Tips for Xian

Get in, get out Xi'an is way behind China in terms of Westerner acceptance. We couldn't get cabs, got a lot of stares and people not terribly interested in serving us. If at all possible, find some way to book a return trip, we couldn't and got stuck overnight in Xian (the Hyatt turned out to be a big help) Beijing was a sea of hospitality compared to Xian. Couple of quick tips - Bus 306 to the Terracotta Warriors is NOT by the big sign in front of the McDonalds. Instead, as you come out of the train station, bear left and in front of the city wall you'll see a hut that says 306 (5). The buses park in front of it. Just board any of the big 306 buses that are parked there, they leave pretty often. Get a tour guide (100 yuan). Afterwards, you can take the 306 or 914 back. The bell tower has a pretty good audio tour, we didn't do the drum tower, but it should be worth it as well. The Muslim street was really interesting market-wise, good selection of street food, didn't see a good restaurant.

Old City Wall Make sure you take some time in Xi'an to see the Old City wall especially at night. The whole wall is 8miles around and you can rent bikes (single or tandem) or golf carts to navigate it.

Terracotta warriors We were ready to join a group tour but mysteriously the CITS staff in Xi'an provided a number to take a personal driver and English speaking guide. It was well worth it and included a stop at an 'arts factory' that makes terracotta in the same style as the originals. Even if you don't buy anything, you learn how the originals were molded and hand finished. at the site, our guide was helpful in pointing out interesting historical facts, and good camera views. A little expensive at 900 yuan for the day for 2 of us, but it also included a stop at the Big Goose Pagoda and the city walls.
