Top Local Tips for Suzhou
Suzhou not really much to offer tourism. My stay in Suzhou was only a short stop of 2 nights & 3 days. Although I was there primarily on business, I did have the chance to look around a little. I read somewhere that old Suzhou was the Venice of China ( who ever wrote this has obviously never been to Venice) :) A trip down the canal is a total waste of time don't bother. A walk through the old city is ok and they do charge and entrance fee to walk down the road which was just full of souvenier shops and some eating places nothing much else. I must say however i found that Suzhou in general is pretty tidy and well looked after, they do call it the garden city and really do have some historical beautiful gardens. Don't go there expecting too much and you won't be disappointed. Stay away from the train station it is just total chaos, however I do understand that they are building a new one. If you don't want to leave it to chance make a reservation at the Renaissance Suzhou Hotel its definitely a brilliant choice.
Bargaining Bargaining is part of the Chinese culture, I was told to offer 1/3 of the asking price of the shop owner and stick to it. Occasionally you may get ripped off, but overall you'll find many good bargains (especially on pearls) that you'll end up forgetting the bad experiences.
Zen I have eaten at many restaurants in Suzhou, particularly in the new Singapore Industrial Area. My favorite restaurant is Zen. Fantastic food with beautiful decor. Your best bet is to go with a local who can order the meal for everyone, but even if you are a foreigner, the menu has English "sub titles" so you can get by. I love the food here and I go there every time I visit Suzhou, which is several times a year (for business).
