Top Local Tips for Suzhou
taking taxis in Suzhou Taxi drivers in Suzhou do not speak English, and the names of places you will want to go will not be recognisable to them in their English form. Even hotel names, such as the Bamboo Grove Hotel, will not be understood as they are not known by their English names in Mandarin. So either learn the names of the places in Mandarin and practice before getting in the taxi (perhaps friendly reception staff in your hotel can help with this- staff at my hotel wrote down names and phrases in Pinyin to help me out) or else get the names written down on a piece of paper to hand the taxi driver when you get in.
Tiger Hill It is worth the short journey to vist Tiger Hill where there is a huge leaning pagoda. It is also nice to get up really early and have a rickshaw ride around the town, stopping to watch some of the locals practising Tai Chi in the morning. The Humble Administrators garden is also very beautiful but make sure you use some insect repellent! Suzhou is also the best place for silk in China so don't forget to take enough money with you!
