Untrustworthy staff - poor service and stolen passport

My passport went missing from the hotel room. I reported this to staff and asked to see the manager. I asked continuosly to see him for three days, first of all he wasn't in, then he was in, then he was busy in a meeting, then occupied all day long. Poor and disappointing response.

Some of the staff were very good and helpful, and others were cold and rude. Suspiciously evasive responses by staff. Good location, continental breakfast is worth missing - scones, croissants, bread. No fresh fruit. Not much English is spoken.

I visit HKG often. Always used to crib about the over priced hotels. Not any more. This place is clean, close to the heart of Kowloom (TST area), yet in a quiet street and great value!

Quiet hotel with exelent location, good standard in normal price. Unfortunatelly staff is young and inefficient .

stayed two nights and room was quite satisfactory. Granted the bathroom is a bit cold and bare, but the water is hot. And true, the staff is not very welcoming...all business and not much smiling. Location was fairly convenient and street seemed quiet.

I am surprised to find a boutique hotel in Hong Kong. I am even more surprised to find one that reminds me of home, London. It is just like what I would have expected from such a hotel. It is personal, warm, upmarket and homely. Indeed, it is just like a home. The drawing room could be my grandmother's sitting room. It is filled with beidermiere furniture, antiques and exquisite paintings. I rate The Minden highly, 9 out of 10. At HK$630 it is true value for money.

Top Local Tips for Hong Kong

Communicating... For a place which was under the British for so long it is amazing that very few taxi drivers speak english.In most places even if taxi drivers don't understand english they would recognize a street name.Here the street name is also not good enough in most cases.However if you are lucky you could find a driver who speaks perfect English but the breed is rare or I was pure unlucky!!Cabs are very reasonabe with the rates and if the driver cannot understand english he puts you on to an english speaking guide( on his mobile phone)who then instructs the driver accordingly but some drivers do not use this facility.

Getting laundry done Getting one's laundry done in Hong Kong is cheap and easy. One is charged by the pound, usually HK$25 total for the first seven pounds. They wash, dry, (minimally) fold your laundry, and pack it all into a plastic bag for you to pick up. You pay when you drop off, and a receipt is issued at that time. Just show the receipt at the time of pick-up. Laundromats are ubiquitous in Hong Kong. We stayed at the Minden Hotel, and used Shanghai Central Dry Cleaners (Shop C, 13-15 Minden Ave., but also with other branches in Kowloon, and one in Sai Kung). They have a two hour turnaround time for regular laundry, and next day service for dry cleaning. We chose this particular laundromat by asking for a recommendation at the Tsim Sha Tsui Tourist Information Centre at the Star Ferry Terminal.

Sweet Dynasty This restaurant on 100 Canton Road is great. Went there 3 times during my trip and loved it every time. It has great deserts. I love the snow fungus with almonds and papaya. Must try and great ambiance!
