Top Local Tips for Hong Kong

Get a Stored-Value travel card - the OCTOPUS - and keep it handy. HK's subway/train/tube system has long had a touch-n-go type travel card system in place, which can also be used on buses, and for some shopping, eg. at 7-Eleven convenience stores. It's called the OCTOPUS card. (In London, a similar one is the OYSTER.) . . . Prices per trip could go to an approx upper-average of HK$15+ (US$2+ or GB£1.20+) for longer trips on the railway system, but buses generally only a few HK$ each. If you travel around a LOT, you might reach HK$100+ (US$14+ or GB£8.50+) per day. PLEASE NOTE the Airport Express train is - last I remember - around HK$60+ (US$8.xx or UK£4-£5) itself, but it's a good price for the speedy, comfortable transit. . . . . . You DO NOT need to "over-charge" your card in advance, as it is VERY easy to charge up at ANY train station. Putting too much value on a card "for convenience" means a greater loss when a pickpocket nicks it! I'd RECOMMEND you put NO MORE than HK$200 (or two days' worth of travel) on it, & just top up as you go! =D

Use the blue taxi to Lantau Island Follow directions at the airport to the raxi rank but only use the light blue cabs as they are Lantau Island cabs. The red ones are mainland and will charge you big!!
