Get an Octopus card Even if you are staying for just a few days it is worth getting an Octopus Card you can buy one easily from any MR station - just ask. They can be topped up at many outlets, and provide you with hassle free transportation you use then like a pay as you go card. On the trams swip as you leave the tram. On the buses as your board. On the MTR on your entrance and exit. The correct fare will always be deducted. You can pay for a "STARBUCKS" with one. Enter the Race Course, buy drinks at machines in parks etc. with no need to carry large amounts of change with you. Using public transport is much more fun than getting a taxi, much cheaper and you get to see more of the island.
