Top Local Tips for Hong Kong

Getting between Hong Kong and Kowloon If you are going to the Kowloon side, take a taxi to Hong Kong Central MTR (subway) and get the subway across the harbour, its MUCH MUCH cheaper than taking a cab. If you take a taxi you need to pay tolls in both direction and the subway-taxi combo is much more worth it and faster. The Star Ferry works as well. But MTR is really quite fast, easy to use, and so clean. all announcements are in English and the system is completely bilingual.

Octopus card Buy an Octopus card - they are great. You pay (2007) HK$150, part of which is a HK$50 returnable deposit. You can use the card for every type of transport in Hong Kong (except taxis) and can even use the card in 7/11 stores to purchase groceries etc. On departure you go to the desk in the airport and get back the deposit and any remaing unused money left on the card. Great system, wish we had it.

Macau Take a day trip to Macau. Book ferry tickets the day before or you will have to wait for up to 2 hours for a ferry. Ferries run every 15 minutes and take an hour. Some lovely buildings and Mediterranean style squares and lots of casinos to lose money in!
