Top Local Tips for Beijing
Great Wall tours Be careful about tour packages to the Great Wall that stop at factory stores. I really didn't think they were worth the time. We had to stop at three different stores (one not mentioned in the tour description) and if you don't have that much interest in buying things at slightly above average prices it really seems like a waste of time.
Tour guides State sanctioned tour guides will take you to "merchandising venues" like the silk market, cloissonee factory, jade museum, etc. But they are surprisingly interesting and you don't have to stay long. Our guide from China Travel Service USA, was very helpful in bypassing lines, giving us background, answering questions & well worth the cost.
Be prepared! We had been watching Beijing's weather on the internet before our trip, and were pleased to see that the temperature was between 5 and 10 Celsius. However, when we were there the first week of December, they experienced a cold front from Russia. We did not bring enough warm clothes and ended up doing a lot of layering! Even though we are from Canada, and are used to the cold, we were chilled to the bone! Be forewarned, Beijing in December can be bitterly cold!
