Top Local Tips for Beijing
A mad shopping zoo, but very cheap! Try the Silk Market for an unforgettable shopping experience. From the time you enter what looks like an office building you will be accosted, manhandled and screamed at by stallholders in a mad retail frenzy. Fake watches, handbags, luggage, designer clothes on hundreds of stalls at unbelievably cheap prices. A hagglers paradise - the first price you are offered is invariably 5x greater than the real price so be bold with your offers.
Sanlitun and the Great Wall Sanlitun is an area full of bars and restaurants just 5 minutes from the hotel and worth a visit at night. Sanlitun also has a great fashion mall in the middle of Bar Street that is worth a visit. There are tailors on the top floor of the mall that make mens suits starting at around AUD100 and shrits for AUD15. Try Brown tailor. The hotel can arrange full day tours to the Great Wall but I was short of time so I hired a taxi for around 600 yuen and was there and back in 4 hours.
Watch out for cab scammers to/from airport & hotel My cab driver put the hotel card over the meter on the way back to the airport. Then he tried to charge me double the rate. I made him pull up the card on the meter and then paid what I owed, even though he held up 3 toll receipts (again a scam), when in fact there's only one.
