Forget the Silk Market! The real deals (for women primarily) are at the Ritan Office Building (borders Ritan Park) on Guanghua Lu. It is a non-descript 3 -4 story building next to the German beer garten (I know, too good to be true!). You will find quality designer goods. Bargain hard! Cash or credit. Don't try on the thing you want most first - try on or ask about something you don't covet (they'll offer you a high price on the first item you eye, and lower prices on everything else). We had trouble getting taxis to understand where we wanted to go - our best success was by having them take us to the US Embassy, then walking 1.5 blocks. There are similar shops lining the street between Guanghua Lu and the Silk Market (sorry no name on the map - but if you walk out of the Ritan Office Building, turn left, then right at the street that borders silk market).
