Top Local Tips for Beijing

Hawkers You will be stopped upwards of 20 times during your stay ( YEs we were stopped 10 times within the Forbidden City itself!) by people asking if you are English and getting into conversation with you and then trying to get you to go and see an exhibition of art etc. We actually got caught once just outside the hotel by two very nice students and were just being freindly when we realised they had ulterior motives. We did go to see the art as it was on the way to the forbidden city and it was very good but felt pressurised and embarrassed as we didn't want to buy. There are not many White/European faces in Beijing so you will be very remarkable.

Great Wall of China Make sure that if you hire a private cab for the day, that he brings you to the correct part of the great wall, we asked to be brought to Badaling, one of the bigger sections but the cab driver refused and we got taken to the nearest section from the Beijing city. The cab driver also took the small very rocky road rather than the highway to avoid paying tolls. His excuse was that he heard from the radio that there was an accident on the highway. We pointed out to him that why then were there so many other vehicles taking the highway & we can't see any jam he mentioned. When there was no action from him to take the highway, we had to insist that he start taking the highway! So stand your ground, they are rude & ruthless.

Eating Out Don't let dodgy looking restraunts put you off eating there. They are much cheaper than any hotels and the food is brilliant. We ate in all sorts of little not very attractive restraunts, however, we were never dissapointed, and never paid more that £7 on a good meal for 2 with drinks. Most restraunts have an English menu, but it is acceptable to point at what other people have and ask for that. We also found a little chemist shop just round the corner where we bought water, ice creams and beers, and never spent more than £1.50!!! We thought we had miscalculated the first time!
