Top Local Tips for Beijing
Airport hotels If you need a hotel to stay for closer to the airport, then choose the Holiday Inn Lido. It's the best western style hotel near the airport. Only about a 20min car trip. If you need to make an early flight and don't want to fight beijing traffic (which is atrocious) then this is the place for you. Also, if you take a taxi, it should cost no more than 50RMB to and from this hotel.
avoid illegal taxis Avoid illegal taxis and taxis that refuse to use the meter. If the driver doesn't switch on the meter or wants to discuss the fare beforehand just get out of the taxi and grab the next one. It's not worth the hassle and no matter how cheap the fare sounds to you it is a rip-off for sure.
Taxi Drivers speak NO English It is a must that you get your conceirge to write in chinese on a card where you want to go. Also take a hotel card as well so that when you want to go back to the hotel your driver will know where to go.Also, get your conceirge to ask the driver how much the fare will cost in advance. The driver will try and rip you off, so you should always get the estimated cost in advance. Saying that you can go practically the whole length of Bejiing for about £7 max and it is a big city.Shopping - when going to the markets when asking the price of an item they will start ridiculously high for example they may ask for say 700 rmb - if you automatically so "no 100 max" the haggling can beginning. Stick to your guns, they like a good argue and 9 times out of 10 you will get your item for your 1st bid. Enjoy it
