Top Local Tips for Beijing
Pushy street vendors The street vendors are extremely aggressive, unlike anything I've ever seen. But, consider this, they will not touch you. So clearly indicate your disinterest in whatever they are selling. Me and my travel companion noticed that rolling our eyes noticeably in there face caused them to back away. Also, hand gestures, a "no" with a wagging hand back and forth caused them to leave us alone. You will likely be approached in a way that makes you feel accosted, but you'll need to get past this emotionally. For the most part they are trying to seel you things for less than 25 cents (US). You will ultimately end up giving some well-considered charity and making some purchases just because you feel some charity toward the sellers. And, you will purchase some things that are unique and incredibly good deals. But, ultimately, the aggressive style of the street vendors is a strong negative. There are police everywhere and intimately the city feels very safe.
Silk street shopping - don't shop anywhere else Go to Silk Street - it's right beside the underground.Haggle as if your life depended upon it. There are 6 floors of market shopping - you won't be disappointed.
Go accross the street to local place Beer at the bar was very expensive. If you look accross the street to the local dive joint it is VERY friendly and cheep!! I mean cheep! less than a dollar for a big beer and chips and they will stay open as long as you stick around. ps. the McDonalds accross the way is OK. I really mean to tell you try the local dives at night accross the street from the hotel! No one ever bothered us and we drank till 3 am for peanuts!! The only thing no bathrooms but the wall in the corner is fine and no one cares. One thing, tip, tip, tip, and a dollar is PLENTY!!!
