Hong Qiao Market (shopping) great deals on pearls -- it's the 3rd floor. There's a famous fish market in the basement level, if you like to see lots of live creatures and have people hold up crabs in your face. It's an experience, but don't go down there if you don't like walking down relatively small aisles. The pearl vendors all sell about the same merchandise, but if you find a place that has a wide selection it's best to buy in bulk. A strand of pearls of low quality (has ridges, not perfectly round, about 8-9mm -- these are on the big side) should run you about 20-30RMB or about $3-5 US dollars. They will start the prices out at 50RMB. The rounder the pearl, the more expensive -- so some of the prices go up to 120RMB per strand, but you should always be able to get it for about half to 2/3 of the price quoted. Just make sure they're real pearls -- tell them to show you and they'll pull out scissors and scrape the pearl. if it's fake you'll see plastic underneath. If it's real, it'll look the same
