Taxi in Beijing - don't bargain! Taxi are usually ok, if you know how to get the right one. The first rule is, that you should never and really never bargain with the driver or especially with somebody outside! If you sit mistakely in a such taxi, where the driver start with bargains, you should just simply go out of the taxi and take another one. There are plenty of them. And the taxi should use his taximeter all the time! The most easily and effective way is to take a taxi, which put off his passengers in front of you.
Watch out for scam artists in Tiananmen and the Forbidden City... Watch out for sophisticated scam artists speaking good English in Beijing, especially the tourist places. With a Caucasian face, I was the target of person after person offering his or her tour services, "go see the Great Wall", "look at my art", and so forth. Some are fairly clever schemes, people who claim to just be there for a conference or the like. Don't fall for it...the only reason they're talking to you is to rip you off. I found it to be really annoying to continually have to brush these people off.
