Top Local Tips for Beijing
Tube Map Before leaving print out a copy of the tube map with both the english and chinese names on it. Make it much easier to get around. We used to get taxis home as pointed to the nearest tube station and it worked like a dream!
Beijing in summer I was told Beijing in summer was too hot - and although it was hot, around 32-32 degrees C most days -because it's a dry heat it wasn't uncomfortable, you just have to be careful to keep drinking lots of (bottled) water. I'm fair-skinned but after five hours hiking in the midday sun I was only mildly sunburnt. The day I arrived it was "fine" meaning the pollution wasn't too bad but a kind of dust storm swept in and it deteriorated over three or four days until the sun barely cast a shadow, and then worsened until the cars had their lights on in the middle of the day. You could barely see 500 metres. However this didn't seem to be a problem apart from visually - I wasn't going to let it stop me anyway. If you visit in summer perhaps have some indoor sights in reserve in case you get a bad day.
Be prepared Be sure to bring Kleenez or wipes with you when you go sightseeing. Toliets probably will not have toliet paper.
