Historical Traveller Reviews of The Kool Hotel

t want to leave!

from shockk
It was our first trip to Siem Reap over Chinese New Year and we sifted through a multitude of accommodation options. And we are glad we chose The Kool. We had initially booked for 3 nights but extended our stay to 5 nights!
After reading about some travellers left high and dry at the airport when promised free pick-ups never showed up, we were pleasantly suprised to be met by Dane who gave us a warm welcome.
There were four of us (parents and 2 boys aged 14 and 10) and we stayed in Indra and Aspara rooms across the hallway from each other. Both rooms were spacious, clean and very nicely furnished with extremely comfortable beds. Heavenly after a hard day temple-trekking! Rooms had electric kettles and hot beverages, with a fridge in the Indra room. There rooms were large enough to accommodate small sofa sets, dressing tables and still had plenty of space for when the whole family assembled in one room.
The bathrooms were spacious and clean with top-class fittings. The showers were powerful though the hot water wasn't very hot. (But who needs very hot water in Siem Reap's weather anyway?)
Though it's our habit to eat outside the hotel when we travel, we found ourselves dining in on three nights. Nat was most helpful in suggesting the food choices. We opted for local Khmer dishes which were excellent and beautifully presented. We loved the fish amok so much, we had it all three nights! The prices were comparable with the ones in restaurants in the Old Market area.
Breakfast was most enjoyable as there's a choice of sandwiches, burrito wraps and cinnamon rolls -- the execellent breads are all freshly made in the hotel kitchen!
We arranged our trips to the temples, Tonle Sap and markets through the hotel. Dane and Nat were very helpful with information and suggestions on how we could best enjoy our stay in Siem Reap. The hotel arranged for a reliable tuk-tuk for our shorter strips and a car for longer trips. They made sure we had the best value for our money by negotiating the best rates and went out of their way to ensure everything went smoothly. Such personal service is indeed a rare find. (Thanks to Dane, we enjoyed a great day out at the Tonle Sap!)
All in all, The Kool is a haven amidst the hustle and bustle (plus the heat and dust) of Siem Reap. We're sure it will get even better when the new pool and restaurant (currently under construction) are up and running. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, and very importantly, conversant in English.
By the way, the boys loved the many TV channels and free internet. (I was told to add this in!).

The Khoo family

A relaxing stay

from WChristian
Our 4 night stay at the Kool Hotel was nothing but an enjoyable one. From the moment we arrived (later than what was informed), we were greeted by the hotel manager who kindly explained what the hotel and Siem Reap have to offer.

The Khmer designed room was spotlessly clean and in generous size. It even has a small couch and coffee table in the room. The water in the evening was only luke-warm, however we later found out that the hotel uses solar panel heater which relies on sun during the day.

The only things that can be improved are the wi-fi connection and breakfast both of which seem to be very slow. To be noticed also that overal service in Cambodia is generally slow. Having said that, these didn't hinder our pleasant stay in the hotel and warm hospitality of Cambodian people.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly and courteous all the time. The managers (Nat & Dan) were always there whenever we needed assistance. The location is in the quiet neighbourhood not far from the town centre and thus a good night sleep is almost guaranteed. The rooftop has a mini pool and here you can see the top of Angkor Wat in the distance.

Overall, we highly recommend this new hotel to anyone coming to Siem Reap. Thanks to everyone at The Kool Hotel and we'll certainly come back on our next visit.

Good value, friendly staff

I stayed at Kool for 4 nights in Jan 09, over Chinese New Year, and had a great experience. The hotel is still in its soft opening phase: the pool is under construction and the (functioning) restaurant is being expanded, but those things did not get in the way of a very pleasant stay.

The staff is very friendly and caring. It's a family business, with two of the family kids running the front desk, along with a Thai general manager. Like most hotels in Siem Reap, they can arrange all kinds of tours and transportation.

Kool is not located in the center of town, but it's an easy 10 minute bike ride or $2 tuk tuk ride to Pub Street. To me, that was a plus, because you get away from the crowds.

Some cons: the hot water had gone out a few times during my stay (but I'm sure this will get fixed as they work out the kinks) and the WiFi is reaaally slow. But overall Kool is an excellent value and I would highly recommend it.

Satisfied GuesT

The Kool hotel is one of the new yet well provided serviced hotels in Siem Reap. From my experience, I have been to many hotels throughout Cambodia but many of them lack a few basics hotels should have. The Kool hotel I must say is very well set out, I mean from the entrance to the suites. The design of the hotel is a fusion between the exotic Cambodian traditional designs with the foreign impact Cambodia was under, French. It's beautiful lay out was well thought up by one of the two owner, Dane who'd been livin most of his life abroad in Sydney, Australia n some parts of New Zealand. For the colors, he chose a foundation of three strong and bold colours, white, gold and black creating a very luxurious relaxing environment. The rooms gave off a very peaceful, relaxing tranquility sense. Added with that were the simple while beautiful furniture that were shockingly comfortable after a long day walk in the temples or the markets. The bathroom were very clean and sapcious, fully equipped with state of the art fascilities. The hotel also offers a wide range of massages with friendly maasirs that really knows how to tackle your pains and cramps. And the cost I must say are very affordable. There is also a restaurant providing exquisite Khmer, Thai and Western cuisines and dishes with daily fresh bread made by the hotel that would totally kick your tastebuds. Other than their service, this hotel also employs a group of friendly, eager staffs especially the receptonist, Nat who is very helpful in organizing trips, giving info, etc. Overall, The Kool hotel is definitely a value for your money that I would totally reccomend to very traveller of all ages.

Back in Aus

from wshane
I'm back in Australia but already planning to return to Cambodia and the Kool Hotel. My sister and nephew have indicated an interest in joining me on my must return to Cambodia. The Kool Hotel were excellent in attending to my every need - but be careful not to hand over any money to tour operators, drivers etc. (except tips of course). The hotel will bill you and then you pay the hotel. Works well once you know the system. The Indra King room was absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to see Dan and Nat's vision for their hotel eventuate in the coming year/s. Thanks guys... wonderful hosts... and thank you to the staff - so hospitable.

I miss you

I barely knew cambodia beforehand except for Angkor Wat and Angkor beer. How am I related to Cambodia? I see not much of a connection.

However, this trip has changed me. Angkor Wat is indeed a great wonder. I would view it, listen to its stories and feel fascinated. But what's more, is that through this trip I see my connection with Cambodia. I start to understand its culture and life of the local people. It is through the staff of Kool hotel, that i see Cambodia as not just a place for visit, but for friendship, family, and perhaps love.

I had a great time in that the staff wholeheartedly treated me. The first night, I went with two staff to a disco. We were drinking, dancing, and they took care of me by holding my jacket while dancing, making sure that I don't pay extra money, and such. I don't see them as staff, but my very first friends in Cambodia.

I visited one of the staff's home province as invited and stayed at his home, after my stay at Siem Reap. I have never thought of living with a Cambodian family and that Cambodians are very friendly and welcoming.

Yes, I am very glad to have stayed at Kool hotel. It gives me a resaon to come back to Cambodia. Next time when I come back, I will no longer be a traveler. The staff and others are my friends now.

A hotel I would choose again!

Clean and nice rooms, gave me a feeling of royalty. Excellent service, the staff did anything to make us satisfied, including surprising one of us on her birthday with personally made "fortune birds"...

Great food in the restaurant, they also help planning transportation and touristic activities.

I highly recommand this hotel!

world class accommodation

from DetoursTravelShow
Beautifully appointed accommodation - large well-lit rooms. Nat, Dan & their great staff looked after our needs with style and a presence whenever they were needed without being obtrusive.

They linked us into accessing local tourist services and provided a single-desk solution approach through their great hotel into the tourism attractions of Siem Reap.

A relaxed stay. Enjoyable. Will definitely return to the Kool Hotel when next in Cambodia.

Outstanding Hotel!

from Traveller_from_NZ_UK
The hotel is new...very tasteful..rooms are spacious and bathrooms are EXCELLENT! The two owners have lived overseas and are near native speakers of English and have an excellent knowledge of the area and the kinds of activities that are available. They arranged drivers, tour guides and also knew when they were not needed. Nothing was too much trouble and everything flowed from the time that they picked me up from the bus. The food they prepare is OUTSTANDING and quality ingredients etc. You could order drinks to your room to relax with. The owners were friendly and the massages were extremely good and very relaxing. I would recommend the place to you without reservation!

Treated Like a Queen

from MeganThailand
I was travelling on my own, and the Kool Hotel staff took great care of me. The room was gorgeous. I live in Thailand, the land of showers, so having a bathtub was a real treat, and there was always plenty of hot water.
There is a small roof top pool, that I didn't use except for the view. There was a DVD viewing room beside it and a collection of DVD's on Cambodian and Khmer history. I recommmend he video S21, about the former Khmer Rouge prison.
The food was excellent and breakfast was included. There was also free internet and a computer for the use of the guests.
The hotel is a taxi ride from the action of the Siem Reap city center, but that may be a bonus for some.
All the rides and tours they booked for me worked out very well, I particularly liked the tour guide (nick named "Cake") that the hotel arranged to take me through the ruins for a day. He was very nice and full of useful informaton. His English was excellent.
This is a very lovely hotel, beautifully furnished and decorated, and good value for the price.

Don't pay if unnecessary Do not pay boat driver or guide tips. I did not know and the guide asked me for ten dollars. But the hotel owner told me that I should not have offered a tip.
