Beware CC fraud

DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD HERE - 2 DAYS AFTER PAYING MY BILL SOME FRAUDULENT TRANSACTIONS WENT THROUGH ON MY CARD IN PARIS, AND IT CAN ONLY HAVE BEEN STAFF MEMBERS FROM THIS HOTEL WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE, I DIDN'T USE IT ANYWHERE ELSE. A nice hotel, traditional colonial style, two swimming pools, good breakfast, excellent room service food, almost mosquito-free thanks to anti-mosquito measures they take. I got a rate of $110 plus 10% tax on their website. I didn't find a cheaper one elsewhere. I would NOT stay here again (because of the credit card fraud).

My complaints would be 1) $20 for in-room wireless internet 8 hours (extortionate) 2) Laundry and minibar outrageously expensive 3) Not telling you in advance about the additional taxes (for the record they are 10% on any price they quote) 4) taxi drivers try to offer taking you to places privately (ie trying to cut out the hotel) - they all did it.

Lackluster

This was one of three hotels we stayed in in Southeast Asia. It was the most lackluster of the three. The room was very small and poorly arranged and looked out onto an ugly, somewhat decrepit courtyard. The cleaning service was somewhat below standard. The public areas were pleasant. I needed to book a room for an event and was told that for 2 hours it would cost $250. When I declined, I was asked how much I was willing to pay. I offered $150 and they accepted this. The end effect was that I felt like the management had been looking for an opportunity to rip me off. The area outside the hotel is undeveloped and difficult to negotiate at night. Better to call for a ride.

Raffles lived up to its reputation. Although old (rooms were older but nice) it is very classy and timeless. The staff was impeccable in service and help. The pool(s) were amazing and much needed after days in the city and exploring the sights. The spa was also wonderful. The food was good, breakfast always the best. The morning coffee was the best I have ever had. Good location, with many dependable and trustworthy tuk-tuk drivers available outside the driveway for hire.

A very indulgent experience

We stayed here for two nights in October.

Raffles is an oasis in the hot city of Phnom Penh. It has a wonderful colonial building, and every touch is pure luxury. The staff are well trained and nothing is too much trouble. Rooms are not particularly large, but very well appointed and beautifully maintained.

The grounds and two swimming pools are beautiful. We did not dine in the most expensive restaurant, as the menu offered was just too rich for our taste, but the more casual cafe served beautiful food, with an excellent level of service. Breakfasts were good too.

Phnom Penh is a very interesting city, and good to explore on foot and by tuk-tuk. The Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) is a landmark worth visiting - again a colonial building with wonderful views across the Tonle Sap river. A great place to sip a drink and watch the world go by.

We would highly recommend Raffles Le Royal.

Step back in time

We stayed at this hotel in July 2006. It's a beautiful oasis away from the mayhem of the city it's self. I loved the setting and the atmosphere. The service was good and I know from time to time people have bad experiences, but everything about this hotel was perfect for us. Have a cocktail in the Elephant bar and listen to the live piano music, I had a Singapore Sling it's a must, you soon forget about the chaos of Phenom Penh.

Some tips: Hire a tuc tuc for the day, the driver will pick you up and drop you off wherever you want to go. Use American dollars wherever you go, don't exchange cash for local currency because you can't change it back again. Have passport photos taken before you go to Cambodia for your visa when you arrive at the airport, it saves a lot of time. We stayed in Seam Reap for 3 nights and Phenom Penh for 2 nights this is plenty of time to see everything. Visit Phuket at the end of a hectic trip to relax.

Raffles was wonderful

We had three nights in this wonderful historic hotel. Don't know whether it was because it was June and the quiet season but there seemed to be hardly any other guests in this huge hotel. Our room was just one of the standard ones but it was great and had a balcony overlooking the fantastic pool. The staff were excellant. Breakfast was also good and we loved the 2 for 1 cocktales in The Elephant Bar each night. Highly recommend a stay in this historic hotel.

very nice. Excellent massage. Very good buffet diner.
Would go there again at any time.

Raffles is a fantastic hotel

I stayed at this recently restored colonial hotel in February 2006, and loved every minute of it. The rooms are great - we stayed in a lovely room in the old part at the front of the hotel, with a large balcony overlooking the gardens. Food and service is excellent, as is the lovely pool area (2 good size pools). The Elephant Bar does great value cocktails at Happy Hour (4-8pm every day). This is a fantastic way to experience a Raffles hotel for a reasonable price. It's also an oasis to escape the madness of Phnom Penh!

An Oasis

Excellent hotel and good value at internet rates. An oasis in a busy dusty but fascinating city. Good service, excellent breakfast, friendly staff and a lovely pool. We had really nice rooms overlooking the pool in the newer part. Not the cheapest hotel used during our Cambodia and Vietnam tour but the nicest. Highly recommended.

Poor service ruined a rather nice hotel

I definitely love the ambience, facilities (the pool, and the location is not too far off. The colonial feels were a nice departure from other modern looking hotels.

The service I recieved from the front desk was so horrible. It will take day to write of what happened to me. Has anyone heard of a 40 minutes checking in process? That was how long it took me to complete the checking in process. They also charged me for the postcards that were in the room. No where did they say they will charge for the postcards if used. I assume they were complementary as else where.

Give it a try if you are willing to deal with the poor service of the front desk.

Foreign Correspondents Club Good food and service and particularly good ambiance

Russian Market Having been told about the markets, but not being much of a shopper I was a little reluctant to spend too much time in them. But after hearing rave reviews regarding the Russian Market we went there first. To be honest I don't know what the fuss is about it's cramped smelly and when someone bought a watch it had no battery and broke within 2 paces of the stall!! Now I know it wasn't the best of ideas to get a watch but when it was taken back to obtain a refund or a new watch we entered into a 10 minute verbal fight just to get an exchange :o( You got followed around a lot of the market by people chanting "Hey Mister" every third stall people tried to peddle dodgy DVDs that would not work back home and it was sooo hot in there I couldn't wait to leave. So onto Central market .... What a difference, light and airy with bargains galore, no hassle at all, the store holders were friendly in fact we like The Central Market so much we went back again!
