Top Local Tips for Phnom Penh

F.C.C. The Foreign Correspondents' Club, on the lake promenade, is a good place to get a taste of home, with Western foods and cappuccino. Go upstairs and sit outside for a great view of the people and traffic going by, and the river. Another tip: take US$ cash, and especially one dollar bills. This is effectively the currency of Cambodia and just about everything seems to cost a buck.

Not for sensitive souls: Tough recent history and blooming corruption I found it extremely tough to meet the Cambodian people and learn of their history. Every person over 30 is seriously traumatised. At first, I thought it was a good idea to visit and spend money - to support the national economy and show the people that I am truly sorry that we in the west did not do more to help them in the 70's and 80's. After a while, I was more unsure. A few people, most of them former Khmer Rouge, seem to be making fortunes on tourism (see http://ki-media.blogspot.com/2006/03/huge-discrepancy-in-reported-angkor.html). Using children for begging is cynically organised, and working people are underpaid (beyond our imagination). Visiting Cambodia made a very strong impression.

Use the Tuk Tuks but avoid the peak Phnom Penh is quite compact - downtown accommodation is quite close to most sites and walking or tuk tuks are definitely the way to go. Take plenty of U.S. dollar bills as this seems to be the defacto currency of Cambodia, and a dollar goes a long way.
