Historical Traveller Reviews of Langham Hotel Melbourne

So disappointed I checked out early and moved to another hotel

from allthroughoutasia
I travel to Melbourne 3 times a year. I have never stayed at the Langham and will not again! I am checking out early and moving to the Como. I was very disappointed in the service. It was sub-par. I rang room service around 8:30 AM the first morning. No answer. Again, no answer. I rang the conceirge to ask about the papers I requested to have delivered and did not arrive. I said there was no one on room service. They transferred me, and again no answer. I asked the concerige if they could take my order, they said no and that room service would ring back. They did but only after 20 minutes -- not impressed for a $300 per night hotel. The rooms are tired and feel worn. There were holes in my drapes. The carpet was well tred and appeared dirty. The 2 redeeming qualities was that the bed was comfortable and the maid service very nice -- granted not thorough.
On day 2, I had to ring about the papers again. They said that they would need to charge me for the papers. Again -- for $300 per night, this should be complimentary.
Yes, it is a chain and feels very much so. Neither character nor personality. This stay has also made my decision to not stay at other Langham properties either.

I stayed at the Langham in July 2006, I also had a reservation to stay for our wedding anniversary in November 2006. I have stayed several times at this hotel when it was known as "The Sheraton Towers" Hovewer, due to a very unpleasant and embarassing situation relating to our dinner bill, I will not be a guest at the hotel again.

The accomodation at the hotel is excellent, large rooms, beautiful decor and very comfortable beds, I could hear toilets being flushed and showers etc. during my last stay, this was disconcerting.

I have found that the Langham does not exude the ambience and grace that the "Sheraton Towers " did. It now feels like any five star hotel and in some areas could be graded lower than five star.

Melbas restaurant no longer has the feeling of luxury and ambience, it is just like any other buffet, albeit five star. The difference is that guests and goodwill do not go hand in hand as it did when the hotel was "The Sheraton Towers". I quote
as told to me by a staff member from Melbas "WE HAVE TO MEET OUR BUDGET". How tacky and unprofessional to mention this to guests.

One of the best

from DaiBell
We had an excellent 4 day stay at this superb hotel. All the staff were genuinely friendly and polite. The room and hotel, although only a few years old, have a style reminiscent of the original London Langham. The room was adequately large and well fitted-out, although lacking in drawer space common to all the Aussie hotels we have stayed at. Everything worked with very quiet and effective air-con. The pool and spa were excellent. Lounge space is limited to the bar area. The position on the South Bank was ideal with direct internal access to the attached Southgate shopping centre. There are many local restaurants. One of the best hotels we've stayed at.

Nice hotel, good location

from mwardle
We had 4 nights at the Langham at the end of our holiday in October. The hotel has impressive lobby and nice public areas. Check-in was excellent and our bags were up to the room within minutes. The room was a good size, nicely appointed with good bathroom. Breakfast was included in our rate and was excellent. The staff were helpful and efficient. Location is excellent too on the opposite side of the river from Flinders station. Excellent restauarants and bars are within a short walk from the hotel. In fact everywhere is walkable from the hotel with good tram connections to places further afield. Overall a nice stay in a hotel with an efficient feel. Only gripe was the cost of internet connection, so often a rip-off in hotels.

Enjoyable stay.

We have just returned from a three week stay in Australia - the final five days spent at the Langham Hotel in Melbourne. We thought we were saving the best hotel until last but we were a bit disappointed.

We booked the hotel using the hotel's own website and chose it because of the reviews on Trip Advisor and the hotel's impressive website. We booked a "Club Room" which is in fact a normal hotel room based on one of the higher floors with use of a Club Room on Floor 24. Guests can use this room for breakfast, afternoon tea, early evening drinks and internet faciliites. The staff in the Club Room were all very friendly and helpful.

There is also a spa, swimming pool and gym. I did use the spa for a couple of treatments and it was excellent. Again the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

We dined at the Restaurant on two separate occasions but although the food was excellent the service was very poor.

Although our stay was very enjoyable I have to say it wasn't quite the five star "experience" we were hoping for.

The best in Melbourne

My wife and I stayed here for five nights in July of 2006 as part of a round the world trip, and can confirm this beautiful hotel seriously deserves it 1st place rating on TripAdvisor.

The location is perfect – within five minutes you can be at Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, all of the restaurants on the North Bank, and the bars, cafes and attractions of the South Bank. The pedestrian bridge across the Yarra River is right opposite the hotel.

We booked one of the club classic rooms on the 24th floor and had access to the club lounge – this is very worth while, whether you are staying for one night or for two weeks. Firstly, the rooms are superb and have every amenity you are likely to need and more. Even the slippers are the best!

The club lounge has a huge selection of delicious food at breakfast, sandwiches and snacks mid afternoon and drinks and savouries in the evenings. At all other times the coffee machine is available and a complimentary selection of pastries. Furthermore, there are two PCs with free internet and printing, a concierge, daily newspapers and magazines, board games and a massive plasma TV.

I also must mention that at very short notice on a Saturday evening the concierge ordered flowers for my wife to take when meeting up with some family, and recommended a local liquor shop where we could pick up a couple of bottles of wine at much better prices than by ordering through the hotel’s own bars.

Furthermore, we arrived on at the hotel at 6:00am due to our flight from Asia and were over the moon to find that our room was ready for us despite not having booked for the previous night! This meant that we could get unpacked, have a few hours sleep in the amazingly comfortable bed, and still enjoy our day.

When in Melbourne, I suggest dining on the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, exploring the shops on the North Bank, and if you are a fan of the soap ‘Neighbours’, then visit the real-life Ramsey Street and go to the Elephant & Wheelbarrow pub in St. Kilda for the ‘Meet your Neighbours’ night which is on every Monday!

We recommend this hotel very highly.

Superb hotel

My husband and I recently spent 3 nights at the Langham in Melbourne. The location, quality and service was practically faultless. We spent 4 weeks travelling through Australia and staying in good quality hotels, this was most certainly one of the best.. I would like to make a special mention of Chris, the concierge, who helped us enormously with our ongoing plans and with our visit to Melbourne itself.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Disappointed

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed a night on our anniversary. Bought a deal but was not told the main lounge area was out of use (for renovation) until I checked in. This lounge was one of the reasons I picked the place so I would not have booked had I known this. Put in a non-river room and asked to move to a river view. Receptionist told me a room was available but would cost as extra $40. As I was paying for myself (and knew I was paying a highish rate) I said I would not pay whereupon the availability suddenly disappeared! Reception staff were cold and unwelcoming I felt. Had a Club room and the lounge area was good and the staff were excellent - a high point of the stay. The front door staff are also to be commended -they were friendly and very efficient. Would only stay if I had a Club Room and a river view-so best to book these ahead. Location is good but would probably pick somewhere else next time.

A 3 Star Experience

from jake15362
Stayed recently at the Langham Hotel in Melbourne as a member of the Leading Hotels. Our stay at this hotel was disappointing and overall a 3 star experience. The deluxe corner room we booked did not make good use of space and was more cramped than anticpated. The view out one side was over the river and the city but the other looked straight into an office block.

Our overall experience of the hotel was dampened by the service. We ordered room service which came with incorrect food and prices. When we were handed the bill I brought to attention the discrepany from the menu to the bill. I was told the menu was a misprint and the bill was correct. Rightly to say we refused to pay the higher price which was accepted. The main restaurant was in renovation so the roof top club room was used which was not able to cope with the capacity of the hotel. We went up for breakfast and was told there was a half an hour wait for a table. We went back to our room until called. The buffet breakfast was very poor and not the quality or range you would expect from a Leading Hotel. There is no ala carte options for breakfast so the buffet is all you have to go for. The in room dining breakfast menu had more attractive options and had we been told in advance would have stayed in our room.

On the positive side the location of the hotel is great. Very convenient to everything. The new Chuan Spa facility is very high quality however once again not matched by the service. The mens change room was out of towels and the dirty linen basket was overflowing. When we told reception we were told there were no male staff on so it was difficult to adress the men's room. Once again not quite what you would expect from a 5 star leading hotel. However the seperate team and saunas were great. The massage I had was also of high quality.

We spoke with the manager about our experience and it was received well which was great.

However I would not choose to stay here again and would definitely recommend the Park Hyatt as my favorite Melbourne Hotel.

Fabulous Hotel

from ChicagoJetGirl
I definitely agree with most of the other reviewers. I felt that I was staying in one of if not the best hotel in Melbourne. The South Bank location is great and allows for easy walks to most city-center destinations, restaurants and shopping. I loved the views of the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station from my room. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The one surprising thing -- given the hotel's caliber -- was that we were never given enough towels. Two people in the room for five nights and never more than one wash cloth. Even when I asked for "lots of extra towels," the most they came up with was two or three. It was hot everyday so we were each taking more than one shower per day. I couldn't blieve that I had to keep calling housekeeping about this. Anyway, the hotel was wonderful, beautiful decor/lobby and a great breakfast buffet that was a good place to fuel-up for before all-day tours. I really liked the open-air deck and pool too. I hope to go back.

Top Local Tips for Southbank

Stay on the southbank This is a good area to eat & drink at night , great atmosphere, but you need to shop around as some of the eatting houses offer substandard food at very high prices. Also walk down the river to the crown casino area and watch the fire heaters (on the hour every hour at night time).
