We booked a SUPERIOR room off the internet and it did not live up to what the internet says about it!

Ok, so the pictures of the building on the booking websites show a beautiful old georgian building, but the rooms you can book off the internet are not in that building - they are in a building behind it - which is just some cheapo crappy building built 30-40 (or longer) years ago. So that was our first shock.

Second, we check in and are given keys to what must be a 'standard' or 'standby' room - the ugliest thing I have ever seen - there is nothing standard about them - double bed + a single - within the ugliest linen ever. A desk and bedside tables that you could not give away - that ugly and worn - they must have got them for free from a youth hostel. The bathroom, was pink and ugly - so tiny - no joke, smaller than a walk-in closet.

So we marched back down to reception and said we booked a room that was specifed 'renovated'. The receptionist eventually 'upgraded' us to a superior room.

This room had recently been renovated - but it is tiny. Very dark style - purple walls and really gloomy. The TV was up on the wall. These superior rooms are on the ground floor and like other reviewers have said, noisy because you're too close to the road and carpark. The bathroom in this room was just as small as the standard one and the shower hadn't been renovated (replaced). THere is no way that these rooms could sleep 3 people as the website says - 2 people in the queen/double bed.

You do get free breakfast, which is of good quality, but considering you pay about $90 for a room the size of a walk-in closet, it's not really worth it.

Also, judging from what others have written, it seems that it is standard policy that if you book a superior room, you are shown to a crappy standard room first, and only if you complain, are you given the correct room.

DO NOT STAY HERE - The superior room is only bearable if there is no other place in melbourne available!

Firstly getting to the Albany. If travelling in Australia by Jetstar you will arrive at Avalon airport approx 45 mins from the CBD. A shuttle will take you to the city for about $15 AUD each. A taxi from here costs Approx $90!
Upon arriving we were shown to a dark green walled room with plaster falling from the ceiling and dirty fridge. We booked a Superior room and this wasn't it!
After the fright of that room we were moved to the correct superior room.
These rooms are only average and are on the ground floor right next to the car park for the whole hotel which means you will here cars coming and going ALL NIGHT. The room had a mini bar and fridge and TV but nothing superior about it.
The hotel is centrally located to all transport just being a block away to the Como centre where you can get some fantastic meals for lunch.
Across the road from the hotel are tennis courts (if you're so inclined) and down the road to the right as you leave the hotel are places like Subway, Chinese restaurant, Gloria Jeans Coffee etc and Trams to the Markets (which I Can highly reccommend).
I wouldn't stay in a room here any lower than a Superior room and even then I would try a mansion room or something much quieter.

This has to go down as the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Staff were fine, breakfast was OK but the room was nothing short of a joke. Cheap furnishings, really uncomfortable bed, tiles falling/fallen off the wall in the bathroom, sticky carpet, zero noise insulation, tiny room. Like a really bad motel from the 70's. I wouldn't ordinarily mind all of this if the price was low but it certainly wasn't. Save your money and stay in a backpackers - it'll be an upgrade quality-wise.

Nothing special

Small, dark room along a corridor that was painted black. Sort of like Gotham City. The first night was freezing cold. In the morning I noticed one of the windows was actually open, because the wooden frames were so rotten it had partly fell off. The hotel duly fixed this with duct tape... as they did to the broken lamp that was falling off the wall.
The hotel information folder told me the room had recently been through some profound changes. The bed was nice, one table was lightweight Ikea cheepo, the other one had seen better days. Pretty OK for the price. Just wondering what the rooms without renovations look like. :)
The reception people were nice but clearly "just working" there. They had the most annoying habit of letting you stand there for ages for any small thing while they kept answering the phone, one, two, three, four phonecalls before they would find the time for you.

Tiny rooms, smoky hallways and teenage boys next door

from georgiamorrison
This hotel is nowhere near up to its reputation and claimed standard. i'm sure if you stay in the mansion or superior rooms it might be ok, but the standard rooms are not up to scratch.

the one we stayed had supposedly been renovated recently.... not that you could tell! the bathroom was cramped (don't be fooled, when they say a shower over a bath, they mean a bird bath) and had the most hideous pink decor (not to mention the lould in the grouting).

the room itself was so tiny you could barely move, and there was no where to put your bags or to unpack your clothes. the heating is set to 30DC and you can't change it. if you open a window to let some cool air in you get cigarette smoke from the smoking area down stairs. the walls are also so thin that you can listen to the conversations being held in the adjoining room (not to mention everything else).

overall it was very poor. we have stayed in significantly better places for significantly less money.

Absolutely stunning place!!

Is this the darkest room in Melbourne?

from Viminalis
The upside it was clean but most of the hotel is not like the pictures would have you believe. Most of the accommodation is in 1970s style brick block motel so common of the era through much of Australia. It's been repainted but the choice of colours leaves something to be desired. Our room was painted deep blue and there were only two wall lights - very gloomy. The brightest light was in the bright pink bathroom which was small by any standard. All the taps dripped (so much for the notice advising that the Albany Hotel supported water saving in Melbourne!) and it wasn't possible to set the room temperature - either warm or hot. Overall the decor and furnishings are tired and somewhat grubby. Reception staff were peremptory - hardly welcoming on arrival. Breakfast was generous with adequate choice. If you're looking for a higher standard of hotel near Toorak this probably isn't for you.

Not as flash as everyone makes out, but still a good place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in a standard room on the second floor, which was very clean, if fairly small. The friends that we were staying with had some trouble with the airconditioning in their room, but were moved to annother room with functional aircon the next day. We were also a little bit disapointed that the decor was not as flash as it looked on their website- the halways were slightly scary, actually, and the texture of the carpets was a little bit yucky, but other than that, it was a clean and comfortable place to stay. The staff were also really friendly and helpful. In terms of breakfast, a better bet than having it at the hotel is to walk down toorak road towards the CBD to a little shopping plaza just beyond macdonalds. There's a nice little cafe there, which does a cheaper and nicer brecky than the albany. All in all, a nice place to stay in a good location. I'd probably go back.

I loved this small little Gem of a hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is truely a little gem of a place. Located on a small street in the south yarra district of Melbourne (on the corner of a busier street but didnt' hear traffic noise), it is only a short tram ride away to the central business distict. The hotel/motel is made up of three different sections containing different types of rooms. First there are the mansion rooms contained in a victorian mansion..adjoining the mansion are the superior rooms and executive rooms. There are standard rooms in the motel part of the place with parking just outside your room door. I stayed in one of the redone superior rooms. The rooms are small but nicely put together. Think hip motel 6 type room with an amazingly well stocked mini bar. I did view one of the mansion rooms. The room I viewed was very large with two beds, a fire place and a seating area. There is also a top floor two bedroom penthouse in the mansion. The Albany provides a nice change from staying in the busier central business district. I really enjoyed being in a "neighborhood" and checking out the small coffee shops and wine bars within walking distance of the hotel. My room was about $100 US dollars a night. I have stayed in many 5 star hotels around the world and the bed in this room was one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in at a hotel. There is also a cafe that provides a buffet breakfast. One has a choice of the hot buffet with eggs, pancakes, bacon, etc or the continental breakfast of muffins, fruit and cereals. If you are looking for quaint in a great neighborhood over a big luxury CBD hotel, then this is your place.

Loved the Albany!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had reserved a "Standard" room at the Albany, August 17-25. We were pleasantly surprised at the nice "motel style" room on the second floor there. The bed was confortable, the air conditioning was fine (although not needed) and the windows opened for fresh air. The bathroom was fine, although definitely not luxurious, and the usual toiletries were furnished. We were surprised to find that the very nice breakfast buffet in the downstairs dining room was included in the cost of the room. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Lastly, I must mention the lovely South Yarra location- across the street from the large Faulkner Park, close to very nice restaurants on Domain and Toorack Roads, and one block from a tram stop (ten minutes to city center). We will return!
