With such great value, its location is fantastically right smack in the middle of the city center. The room is neat and clean and fully furnished. The service was great too and I simply enjoyed my stay at this hotel for 5 days! I'll return again when I go to Melbourne.

I stayed with 2 friends @ the Victoria. We were pleasantly surprised at the comfort, cleanliness and obliging staff at this hotel. Location is wonderful, close to city and sports centres.

I couldn't fault this hotel at all. I was travelling on my own and the single room had everything that I needed. The hotel was very central and was on the Skybus route from the airport. It was also very reasonably priced. The staff were very helpful and always pleasant. It was the end of my holiday in Australia and the best way possible to end it.

Excellent base for shopping trip

from Rubynz
My 18yo daughter and I have just returned from our 1st trip to Melbourne for the sole purpose of shopping.
We had 3 nights here and for our purpose it was fine. Couldn't have asked for a better location to the CBD (became an important issue when I sprained my ankle on the 2nd morning there) There is a taxi rank virtually outside the door. The room we had was old but clean, excellent shower, hairdryer, shampoos etc, in-room safe, small fridge, air con/heating, t.v, window with no view but we weren't there through the day so it wasn't an issue for us. Service desk was helpful but some smiles would have been nice. As we were so tired from shopping all day, we ordered Thai from next door for dinner every night, they would ring our room when ready, and I'd send the daughter down for it :-) It was a good meal.
We would stay here again.

Great value,

I thought this hotel was an outstanding value. No, it's not a Hilton. If you require that kind of comfort, Melbourne has those hotels, about five times the price of the Victoria. I had a small room, quiet, no real view, no bug in the room, immaculate brand new tiled bathroom, in room safe, air conditioning/heater, hair dryer, shampoo amenities, phone, cable t.v., , well lit, clean all around for their internet special of around $75 Australian dollars. The hotel is "managed" by Accor Hotels, (Sofietl, Le Meridian etc.). I read all of the other reviews, and was a bit surprised at some of them. I found this to be an incredible value, compared to other nearby hotels that were five times the price. The staff were friendly, the adjacent Thai restaurant was also good, and the location simply can't be beat. I would try for a room not facing the uninteresting street, as there was construction outside there. The hotel even had an indoor pool and gym. The bed was fine, the sheets were really good quality and all totally clean. Yes, it's an old hotel, I think from the 1880's, but overall a teriffic value.

Location, Location!

from livingsimple
My husband and i just spent 2 nights at the Victoria Hotel in Melbourne city. After hearing what a 'dump' this place used to be, we thought we would give it a go and were pleasantly suprised! We booked a double room with ensuite, and although this is definitely no 'Hilton', we were very impressed by the friendly staff, clean small rooms, and good hotel facilities (spa, small pool, internet cafe, bar with good pool table!), but most of all the LOCATION won us over! Ten steps down Little Collins Street and we were in the heart of the city! We also took a stroll from the Rod Laver Arena and was at our hotel room in no time. The only down-side to the hotel was the view (you don't get one!!). We kept our blinds closed most of the weekend or else look straight at brick walls or pipes, etc! We paid a little extra to get breakfast included with our accommodation and am pleased to say it was fantastic -although the que 'to be seated' each morning was ridiculously long and slow for some reason?!

After reading reviews on this site, we asked for a 'quiet room' when we booked and they did not disappoint. We are sensitive to noise, as we live in the middle of the bush, but we slept very soundly on both nights.

So, if you are after a place for a few nights, are on a budget ($120 per night/per couple), want to be very close to the city, and are not worried about spending too much time in your hotel room, then i'd recommend the Victoria Hotel!

Slept in better bus shelters

from Leyland123
Probably one of the worst hotels that we have stayed in. This was our own fault as we were on a tight budget and they say "you get what you pay for" this was very true.

Room was very poky and old fashion the inside of the hotel reminds me of a very old department store, carpets could have done with a hoover or better still torched.

Staff on reception very dismissive bordering on the rude and valet parking got a little stroppy when i wanted to take the car out " i've parked the car right at the back and now i'm gonna have to move it".

Apart from this, location is great if you want to be in the centre of things everything is on the door step, breakfast is ok.

Shop around and if you can stretch a few more dollars then do.

I came home with bed bug bites

from A TripAdvisor Member
Yep, the location is great and all that but unfortunately it seems that I shared my bed with bed bugs. I stayed for one night and upon returning home now have red raised lumps on my arms, shoulders, neck, face and lower legs. I won't be coming back for a return visit.

Good Location - but little else

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed for a week at the Victoria

Good things

+ Excellent location
+ Very good value - AUD$70 on ratestogo for a single
+room design quite OK (apart from silly aircondition blocking window view)

Bad things
-Toilet was not properly cleaned on arrival
-silly aircondition blocking window view
-generally hotel areas were not cleanned and for a hotel that size you need resident housekeepers especially during the weekend where lots of partying is going on
-noice some evening from party-goers staying the hotel
-they charge for internet $4 per 1/2 hour (buy 24 hours for $12 valid for up to 7 days)
- their internet did not work for most of the time i was there 6-11 Feb
-did not find staff particularly friendly

Would I stay again ?
probably not - but again value wise difficult to bit

Basic, but a top spot

from Dacquiri
The Victoria Hotel, in Little Collins St., Melbourne, is an average hotel in a top location that is usually available for a very good rate. It's in the heart of Melbourne, minutes from Town Hall, Flinders St station, Federation Square (with Visitors Centre), Swanston St., trams and buses, and just about anything you'd want to walk to.
Acting on other travellers' warnings, due to construction work nearby, we asked for a quiet room at the back of the hotel. The room was spacious enough, but a bit claustrophobic, as the small window was high up above the air conditioner and looked out over a gloomy alleyway. One morning about 8am, we were treated to half an hour's noise and vibrations from the nearby building works, which felt like they were just under us. The housekeeping was also a bit hit-and-miss, but desk staff were polite and efficient.
Would we stay there again? Yes -- nothing really wrong with it, and the price is the major attraction (if you book thru a discount website) -- about $100/night for a double/twin, in a fantastic location in the heart of Melbourne.

Terrible experience

from JosephNg
The hotel was booked through travel agent with flight tickets, and we haven't checked any information about this hotel from the Internet, and we got a terrible experience.

No shower and toilet in our room, we had to use the public bathroom. The room was not clean. The windows was facing other room and a lot of noise from air-con. The bed was uncomfortable, it sank into the middle.

Had a facelift

from magpie71
Recently had some renovations and is looking good. For price and location the Vic is unbeatable. Asking for a room towards the back of the hotel keeps you away from the street and elevators and is very quiet. Staff were brilliant also.

Great location but a little shabby

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our first impressions of the Victoria were not the best, but this was due to the coach driver who seemed to take us on a tour of the city before dropping us off! So we were perhaps a little grumpy when we did eventually get there. However, walking for what seemed like miles through a building site (most of the rooms on the floor we were on were being renovated) did not really improve the situation. The room was a good size but the air con was attached to the window, meaning we couldn't see out. (it would have been nice to see what the weather was like!). Bathroom was a good size, and there was a fridge, ironing board etc so no problems in that direction. Getting out again in the morning proved tiresome, with the omnipresent smell of paint.

Vic's bar was quite good - not the most atmospheric place I have ever been to but handy for a quick drink. The whole hotel seemed to have an air of faded grandeur, so perhaps that paint job is sorely needed!

Top Local Tips for Melbourne

Tram & Train Tickets While the trams have machines on board to purchase your ticket, I found these somewhat erratic! I would recommend pre-purchasing your ticket from a MetShop or from the railay station, etc as it is good to have a person to tell you what zone you need, etc and to provide change when needed!

Aussie rules If in Melbourne and have a chance go to an Aussie rules game the tickets are good value and you will probably will not understand the rules but it was an enjoyable experience Also as it was the MCG magnificient stadium

Getting to and from the airport The Skybus is the cheapest option getting to and from the city if you are travelling solo or in a pair. More than that, split the cab fare (around $50 one way), Skybus $24 return. Once in to Spencer street station there is a shuttle bus that transfers to hotels, but there can be a bit of a wait. Ideal if you are staying near Spencer St Station though.
