This hotel is definitely the finest we have ever stayed in. From the time we stepped foot in this delightfully stylish place, we were made to feel at home. The front desk staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel itself has many fine pieces of art throughout the building and the furnishings were simplely superb. Our suite, which was a standard double was far from standard. Beautifully decked out rooms, not just 1 pokey room, 2 spacious full rooms plus a lovely bathroom with spa bath. Restaurant was great and not expensive for the standard of food, breakfast buffet was a feast! Pool and spa area were on the top floor complete with a glass ceiling which was rolled back during lovely days it was Heaven! We will be returning soon rather later. Great value beautiful hotel. Great customer service, with lots of genuine smiles Central location.

It is difficult to know where to begin, check in was surly, in my room I checked the internet charges and was horrified spoke to reception and said that i would change hotels no reaction whatsoever asked for a manger to call me diddn't happen.Back in my room I decided to pay internet charges and because I was prepaid decided to stay. Big mistake first internet did not work staff unable to help other than the switch off and try again approach. I found the problem it was a broken connector at the wall, this was replaced by maintenance but I lost an hour of connection.
Next morning I asked that a kight bulb over the bed be replaced and that I be shown how to switch off the light over the cooker which along with the bathroom light is not controlled by the so called Master Switch. Arrived back that evening nothing had been done called housekeeping again and same maintenance came and fixed things.
There is minimal storage in the room had my wife been with me we certainly would not have stayed.
Ordered room service dinner and selected all day breakfast, this came with one egg not two as shown in the menu and was arguably the worst meal I have ever had, sausages grilled tomato and hash brown simply inedible.
The lamps in my room leaned at drunken angles because they were not connect securely to the base posing a potential danger of electrocution, All wall lights hung ar crazy angles and the lighting was generally very poor for a working environment. The television would have been more at home in a cheap motel, reception on the cable channels was very poor and there was not a single business channel so no market information.
I used the unattended gym and was constantly disturbed by children racing through to their room on the other side, I was also disturbed by children running up and down outside my room as I tried to work.
I asked in the morning if a suit could be pressed quickly as I had a meeting, I was told they would send it out and return it at 6.00pm
I never once saw a manager and nobody ever asked me how things were.
Summarry A cold sterile impersonal hotel not at all suited to the business traveller. Altogether awful should be rated no higher than 3 stars

Booked this holiday with travel agent and was told we had a 40 square bedroom that would sleep four people, also confirmed this hotel. Upon arrival looked at room it was too small for four people also no room for luggage. Then had to pay $600 to be upgraded to bigger room. Hot water tap came off in your hand also soap holder came off while having shower and just missed my foot. Sliverfish were found in carpet, heating would go from hot to cold with out you touching control button. Spa was just a normal bath with jets. Managment were no help at all did not even come and talk to us. This hotel should not be rated a 5 star it should be 2 star. As we looked at other hotels in cbd area and they were alot nicer and bigger then the STAMFORD. The only good thing i can say about this place was the girl behind the front desk her name was SARAH.....

Historical Traveller Reviews of Stamford Plaza Melbourne Hotel

Great location, front desk unfriendly

from JonahJ
We booked Stamford Plaza, based on star rating, but The Stamford is more 4 star than 5 star. It was a cosy room, and the location is unbeatable, however the rooms are pretty small and hot. Nice comfy beds though.
The staff who helped with extra bedding, morning papers etc were lovely, but some of the people on front desk reception were quite rude and unhelpful. They also mucked up the bill, even though we had been down to reception to double check what was included.
The breakfast set-up is also a bit chaotic but a good variety.
Best for two people max.

Nice hotel but not suitable for families

from cheryljm
I stayed at the Stamford on two occasions.... the first time we had a beautiful two-bedroom suite. Then we went to Perth and Sydney, and returned to Melbourne (for our flight home) to check into a cramped twin room with a pull-out bed, despite paying the same price for both rooms! I think this could be due to the fact that we visited during the Commonwealth Games and the hotel was extremely full. We had to stay at the Stamford because our first hotel (the Riverside Apartments) wasn't available for the entire duration of our stay.

Generally, the hotel is very good and centrally located close to the shops on Swanston and Bourke Streets. The lobby, lifts and fresh flowers in reception are very impressive and the staff and friendly and courteous. However, the mini bar was extortionately priced ($15 for a mini-bottle of Jacobs Creek that contained about two glasses of wine... it retails at $6 for a FULL bottle!) and the spa/pool was very small considering the size of the hotel. The pool had an interesting mix of children, business travellers and couples, which didn't work together in complete harmony!! Although the roof of the pool rolls back which is pretty cool... we could look up to see a huge 40- or 50-storey building towering above us which was really surreal, it was like swimming in the middle of a city yet it felt very private.

Our first suite (the two bedroom) was very luxurious, with two private bathrooms inter-connecting with the bedrooms. I had my own private bathroom, and my Mum and Dad had the other. We could open out the sliding doors to make the room seem more spacious, and close the doors for privacy at night. The kitchen was adequate but not really suitable for self catering, and the hotel is obviously geered towards business/wealthy travellers as room service is expensive... around $30 per person for in-room breakfast! The second room we stayed in had two twin beds and a surprisingly comfortable roll-out bed for me. However, the sink area was not screened off from the twin beds and the wardrobe wasn't great as regards storage space.

I would stay at this hotel again but only as a business traveller or a couple. I'm sure the hotel is very romantic for couples but it definitely isn't designed for families!!

Overall, very friendly and professional reception staff, porters and concierge (a really friendly man, called Reg if I remember rightly), and extremely courteous and hard working housekeeping staff.

nice hotel.very good location

from Barney64
I stayed in this hotel during a visit to melbourne with my wife and teenage daughter.we stayed 6 nights and thouroughly enjoyed the hotel.
We arrived at the hotel around 8am and the reception was very helpful in finding a room for us within a half hour of our arrival.the room was spacious, with living area, kitchen area and a large double bed.My daughter had a very good double sofa bed to sleep on.
the hotel feels more aimed at the business market but i have to say that this did not impact on our stay, finding all of the staff, both professional and helpful.
the hotel has a small gym and a top floor swimming pool and jacuzzi.which(if the weather allows) has a retractable roof for "al fresco" bathing.
on the ground floor is a restaurant and bar.we found the real benefit of the stamford plaza to be its location.it is no more than 5 mins walk from china town or flinders street, with the upmartket shops of collins street just around the corner.
to summerize.this is a hotel which i would happily use again during a visit to melbourne.im sure it is possible to find plusher hotels but for location and value for money it will be hard to beat.

Very disappointing Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
i am a flight attendant and stay in hotels of 4- 5 star all over Australia and the world. The Stamford Plaza Melbourne should be rated as a 3 star hotel. My partner booked this hotel for our anniversary as a suprise and we were both sadly disappointed. The staff were not helpful or friendly. The standard room was dated and too small in the bedroom area and bathroom. The jacuzzi is not a jacucci it was a yukky normal bath with 4 weak and noisy jets its size would be best for kids to bath in!! The kitchen had not enough plates or cutley for the two of us. Cleanliness was also an issue the bathroom had mold spots and smears on wall. The heating/ cooling system is very noisy and kept us awake. Car parking was not included in any deals they had on offer or was buffet breakfast at their resturant -parking was $28 a day and we had two cars!!! there was no facity to play cds / DVDs as every 5 star hotel offers now. my patner wanted to play a cd he had made for our anniversary so rung to see if they had one. Reception said they would ring back and let us know about this. one hr later we rung her, she had forgotten our request. In the end we had to pay $44 to get one!!! the cd player wouldnt have even been worth $44!! Also the tv has nothing to offer other than melb standard tv stations and $17 movies. Two weeks i stayed in a 4 star Bali resort that had its own dvd player and foxtel !!! To add to the bad service your key locks you out of your room at 10am check out time even if you have a late 12 pm one i had to go down to the reception in my bathers to get this fixed!! not good enough!! I strongly recomend you dont stay here. Get an apartment in the 'docklands serviced apartments' for brand new facilities fully equip kitchen and great veiws, or if you want inner city the 'Paramount serviced apartments ' in Exhibition street.

Upbeatable location

This hotel has an amazing location. Its located within walking distance of everything including all the good eating places!

Service staff and very friendly and knowledgable. They give good recommendations.

Want to commend the doorman. After asking our names once, the remembered it for the rest of our trip. He also makes a point to ask you what time you want your car brought up when he sees you and you don't have to call to remind.

Great location in Melnourne

We stayed for 4 nights at the Stamford Plaza from 20-24 Feb 2006. The location on arrival seems a bit back street, but you soon realise you are between Collins Street and Bourke Street which are the main shopping areas and tram routes. The reception is quite impressive as it is open in the middle up to the 16th Floor, the check in was quick and our bags were taken up to our room for us, there are 2 towers East And West, next to each other, the pool is at the top of the East Tower, and the roof goes back if you want to catch a few rays, there is also a spa bath there, and sauna and they provide pool towels. Our room was large, we had a lounge, kitchen with dishwasher and microwave, oven, toaster, kettle, fridge and minibar. There is a dining table for 4, and lounge seating for 5. There are 2 bedrooms, the master suite had the smaller bathroom, with a bath, and the 2nd bedroom had the bigger bathroow with shower cubicele. You have safety boxes int he wardrobe, and you get slippers and robes. The beds are comfortable, and the air con can be controlled from the bedside. You also get full power hairdryers.

Not great views and some building work over the road, but no noise disturbance and walking distance to everything so ideal place in Melbourne. We stayed here with our 2 children, aged 4 & 6 so its great for families too.

lovely spacious suite

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Stamford sits in a great location in Little Collins Street within easy walking distance to the heart of the city. Little Collins Street is known as “The Paris End” specializing in boutique and exclusive shops. It is also close to some of Melbourne’s best restaurants and cafés. Upon arriving we were upgraded to a two bedroom suite (1512) actually one could call it an apartment. A spacious lounge dining area with colour TV and CD player. A separate kitchen with marble bench tops, standard size fridge, microwave, stove, toaster, kettle and coffee peculator!! (with fresh coffee provided).

The main bedroom has sliding wooden doors off the living room with queen size bed and ample wardrobe space, the bedroom has a dressing room with a small bathroom with spa bath and overhead shower. The second bedroom has two twin beds working desk, wardrobe and bathroom with walk-in shower and toilet. The furniture is elegant with silk curtains and Roman blinds which creates a attractive stylish atmosphere. This apartment would certainly suit a family or two couples looking for value, as its spacious and relatively private with two separate bathrooms. There are three balconies in the suite, one large with opening sliding doors from the living room, with cute iron table and chairs offering a outlook towards the Botanical gardens. The other two balconies are petite with views of ugly office blocks.
,
Other facilities include small indoor swimming pool, sauna and spa on the 16th floor. There is premium in-house dining, laundry service and broadband connection.(ours was not working at the time !) Harry’s Bistro and café is located on the Lobby floor with a average lobby bar next door.

PROS: Centrally positioned within walking distance to heart of city. All rooms are suites roomy and gracefully furnished. Staff are cooperative and welcoming. The Stamford feels more like an exclusive apartment building than a hotel. Highly recommended.

CONS: In day time the rooms are dim..one needs to put the lights on. Broadband inactive. {Incident: 2.30am phone ringing and pounding at door..woke in horror thinking “fire” Hubby answers door, woman looking for Mike…No Mike here..we hop back into bed. I say. probably hooker with wrong room number. Five Minutes later phone rings…hubby says NO Mike here.. the brainless woman keeps waking us up!! Staff solve problem , but poor hubby wide awake now, with a 7.30am start for conference. [Traffic bad for taxi rides. Two buildings east and west towers are separated by in-house covered bridge; it can make you feel isolated from hotel. No king size bed for my 6ft 4ins man.

OVERALL: just what the doctor ordered ,for a city hotel…a home away from home.(incident could happen in any hotel).Pity about the bed.-because almost faultless.

Very good

from PhilSpoors
I found this hotel to be everything I expected of a 5* hotel in a very good location. Staff were friendly and efficient and the facilities were fine.

There are plenty of good hotels in Melbourne of a similar standard but I would definately stay here again.

Good location but a bit tired

from stanleyn
The mini-suites scheme is a good idea if you're staying for more than a day or two. And the location is good in Little Collins Street, close to the centre. But it's a bit tired - the bathroom is uninviting in particular. And the room I had looked straight out at a wall 3 metres away - a bit depressing. Lots of the rooms would be like that.

Nice hotel in good location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Nice hotel. And the location is great. It is walking distance to everything. This isn't the flashest or newest hotel in the city, but the price is good and the location is great.

Top Local Tips for Melbourne

Rockpool Dont miss out. I am a Steak Freak and the Rockpool is steak perfection. Great wine list, great service and a good bargain if you travel on the pound.

St Kilda get the tram to st kilda for the day, great beach for kids and a theme park

Unpredictable weather I have found that taking a scarf that can be used as a shawl also to be very handy as the weather in Melbourne can be warm one minute and then cold and windy the next.
