Historical Traveller Reviews of Saville On Russell Melbourne Hotel
good locationfrom Bussman
We had chosen the one bed-room apartment and were pleasantly surprised at what we found. It was rather spacious, clean and well equipped. 'Twas certainly convenient having your own kitchen and washer/dryer.
Apart from the that, the hotel was nicely located in the melbourne CBD, only 5-10 mins walk to the main shopping areas. Being on the edge of Chinatown makes finding food not a problem. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel so am unable to comment on that. The bus-stop and tramstop (the free services) was only a 5 minute walk away which made touring Melbourne less of a problem.
To give a balanced review, here comes the bad points.
Firstly, There was a potential problem with noise. On the first two nights, we were given a room on the 8th floor. The hotel is located on a main street with a few pubs/clubs closeby, so we could hear the music well into the early hours. When we approached the reception regarding this, they kindly changed our room to a similar one on the 18th floor instead.
Secondly, if you are used to a free wireless internet service in a hotel, you'll be sadly disappointed here (the same for the rest of the hotels we stayed in for our Australia tour). It was quite expensive to use the internet.
On balance, we would come back to the Saville. Just make sure you ask for a room on a pretty high floor. That is ... if you're not afraid of heights.
Good location but overratedfrom travelcomments
The location is a nice and there are plenty of shops, coffee places and restaurants nearby.
The rooms are decent but nothing special. The design got a bit stuck between 1980s furniture and recent color bright schemes.
The gym is sparsly equipped and lacks cleanliness. There are no free weights or eliptical trainers.
The bathroom in my room was not clean and the shower-tub combination had mold.
Two elevators I used were not clean and in both a button each was missing on the panel.
For AUD 200 per night this hotel is overpriced.

Great Hotelfrom Janie M
The pool is an average size for a city hotel pool, its very nice and although not large, when I was there (leading upto Christmas) never crowded. The gym overlooks the pool and I was pleased with the 2 treadmills, bikes and all the weights etc. We only used the restaurant for breakfast once (we self-catered for the rest of our stay) but it was excellent and we felt we had value for money at $15 AUD per person. We will definately be staying at the Saville on Russell when we go back to Melbourne.
Great value for money!from FITCHICK711
Reception and concierge were very helpful and handled the busy times quite well. Rooms very nice with a kitchenette, and more spacious than most hotels.
I used the gym and pool and it was not bad at all. Location is also excellent, Bourke St. mall and Melbourne Central are just a block away, very handy as I was doing some Christmas shopping.
I agree with another reviewer about parking - safe, secure and direct access from the hotel - a very big plus when staying in Melbourne, as parking can become a nightmare sometimes. We had a really horrible experience once when we stayed at Oaks on Market - see my review about it.
Back to the Saville - I would highly recommend this hotel if you want good value for your money and if you are doing a lot of shopping! :-)
Very Nicefrom R3kl355
The rooms (I was staying in varios studio apartments) are well designed and give a good impression of space. Even the smaller rooms have a kitchenette and sink. Bathrooms are nice, soaps such are complementary. Room service menu and cleaning was spot on.
The main reason I prefered it over The Causeway however, was
1/ The Parking. Hotels on the cheaper scale in the Melbourne CBD generally dont have parking, or have a deal with a nearby Public park that they can give you a cheaper rate at. Saville have their own enclosed lot on level 5 or the nextdoor parking structure, and you are alble to use an elevator from it to your hotel floor. 24 hours accessible, with a moderate flat fee. This beats other hotels I stayed at where you park blocks away, cant enter after midnight or 2:00am, and have crazy fees like $13 every time you exit the structure.
2/ Balcony. The rooms have balconies, with view. This doesn't sound so amazing until you stay at a hotel without one. This also helps keep the rooms smoke free, as people are more inclused to smoke outside on the balcony, and not in the room.
3/ Internet. Most Melbourne hotels rip you pretty hard for internet. And yes it was expensive here, and not that fast or high in bandwidth, but it worked. Causeway, and many other hotels still have dial-up only. I can't remember when I last used dial up... Anyway, when Saville at some point get hotel wide wireless for free of very cheap, Ill be even happier.
4/ I was able to book my room most of the time for $125 AUD, which is 10 more than some motels in the area, this is brilliant and insane value. The same room can cost around $315 AUD at busy times, which is a bit expensive IMO, but I belive that the rooms are worth $200 - $240 AUD, as nothing is shabby, and I would pay this.
ALl the staff where very friendy, and it was a breeze for me to check in and out, both times of my 2 seperate stays of 2 weeks. nice

Top Local Tips for Melbourne
Famous and amazing restaurant The Flower Drum restaurant is around the corner. Book weeks in advance.
Trams There is a free tram service called the City Circle running in both clockwise & anticlockwise direction throughout the day which is great for reaching the new docklands development. There is also a running commentary on points of interest.
Trams Some of the city trams are free off peak and on certain city routes - worth checking out espcially for those who dont want to walk everywhere
