Historical Traveller Reviews of Rendezvous Hotel

Not what it seems

from mobert
Ok fellow travellers, let me update you on this little hotel. What you see is not exactly what you get. First off, the hotel is in the midst of a major renovation. It just doesn't seem that way since they are doing it by floor. The lobby shows no sign of any work being done. The lower floors which have been revovated are very pleasant with small but very hip rooms. The higher rooms which can have great views of the Yarra river are absolutely horrid. Filthy, old, cramped, and crummy. Make sure you are not getting one of these. Hotel location - close to the river and the main drag on Collins but I would characterize it as seedy. Service was good though. On our last night after returning from a road trip of Great Ocean Drive, they upgraded us to the renovated room. That's when I saw the difference. For the extra $25.00 US, spring for it. All the difference in the world. Would I stay here again. Not sure. I liked the renovated rooms but the area outside the hotel ain't great. But it improves dramatically two blocks away.

No worries

My wife and I stayed in the Duxton as part of our Melbourne/Sydney trip last year.

Obviously this won't be the most updated of reviews, but hopefully it may help shed some light on the hotel itself. Overall, the hotel was very pleasant - having been blessed with the opportunity to travel to many places in the world, I would simply say that this is a hotel that you would not need to worry about.

In terms of outlook and location the Duxton is excellent. The building itself is a fairly charming historical building located on Flinders Street near the bank of the Yarra river and a momentary stroll away from the grand Flinders Street Station and the Elizabeth Street Tram terminus - which meant it was an excellent base to travel elsewhere to see the rest of Melbourne.

While it benefitted from being located in central Melbourne - and which therefore meant we were within walking distance of or a short tram ride from most of the attractions within the city centre - it was nestled in a fairly quaint area so we had no issues with noise etc. It is also located near one of the bridges that stem across the Yarra, so you are literally 5 mins away the hip southbank of the river and the Crown hotel and casino - the view at night is fairly spectacular.

The hotel itself is quite smart - the lobby are is quite impressive and the common areas have a nice colonial feel to it. There are conference centres and a nice restaurant located in the basement and again the decor is quite nice.

The rooms themselves had a more 'business' feel to them - four walls and a bed was all our room really was, but having said that it was very well maintained, clean, open, and cosy. I cannot recall but I think we had booked one of the standard rooms, so maybe that was the reason.

The staff at the Duxton were excellent. The frontdesk staff were very professional although they seemed a little rigid at times! The concierge was excellent and were always more than happy to help us out with planning our travels and booking day trips - they also gave us honest comments regarding the local attractions and which operators to use.

Overall, the hotel is nice...more than nice, and the staff are competent, friendly and helpful. If I were to travel to Melbourne again I would stay there simply because of the assurance of quality.

If I were to be anal and pedantic, and had to point out flaws about this hotel, then I would say the following, although honestly speaking they really are not detrimental:

- There are better looking hotels in the area, no doubt about it, but of course they will naturally cost you more too - so its a matter of value for money.

- The hotel may not be the best for business travellers. I am not sure if they have upgraded the facilities since then, but I had to use their small business centre for accessing the net and keeping track of work and you had to pay each time you used it. Having said that there was no time limit so you could comfortably get on with it and not worry about hurrying your work.

- There was NO early check-in arrangement - hence the rigidity I referred to earlier. We arrived at the hotel around 11 or 12 and pleaded in vain to the staff to let us check in early - they were having none of it and we were forced to wait for another hour or two, which after 9 hour flight from Hong Kong, was not amusing. I mention this because we were told when booking that they DID have an early check-in policy, so make sure you enquire.

Like I said however, the flaws were not detrimental and it can best be described as 'safe' and 'pleasant'. Hope this helps.

Great Location, Friendly Staff

from AngelaDM
The hotel is in a great location, the rooms clean and well appointed, and the staff were great. I was at the Duxton for a little more than two weeks, and the staff really made me feel at home.

This is a great hotel if you are traveling for business or pleasure - near everything and the location is safe.

Happy Anniversary

from Smiffo
I booked Rendezvous as a secret hotel so I didn't know anything about it til after i had booked and paid. When i found out the name of the hotel i came here to read the reviews. I was really dissapointed cause the reviews didn't seem to be very positive and because it was for an anniversary i wanted it to be special.

When we got there i was very presently suprirsed. First of all the location is fantastic! Directly opposite Flinders St Station and just a short walk to Southbank and Crown Casino.

The staff at the front desk were very kind and friendly. When they found out our booking was for a special occassion they made sure we had a nice deluxe room with a balcony . Yes the room was smallish but nothing like what other people have said. I thought it would be so small that we would barely be able to move about the place but it was fine for 2 people.

The bathroom was small but that didn't cause a problem as it was just the two of us and we were hardly in there.

Overall i would say it's a perfect base for exploring Melbourne. I don't think i'd pay full price but why would you when there are so many great deals going around on the net now?? We paid $110 for the night.

Good location

from beach_specialists
Used to be Duxton Hotel now changed to Rendezvous Hotel.

Location is very handy to Southbank and City. Opposite Flinders Street Station & near Federation Square. Most things handy on foot.

Stayed in Metro Room and then Deluxe Room, both are very small. The bathrooms also. Linen was quite dusty and a basic minibar. Poor lighting in the deluxe room, with them all on it was very dim. View was of office building. Not noise proof, could easily hear noise from next rooms. Corridors have carpeted wooden floors and creak each time someone walks up and down them.

Not a bad hotel for a short stay in Melbourne but if you are wanting to treat yourselves would suggest other hotels. Advertised as 4.5 star rating but this might apply to Club Room or Commerce Room.

mystery hotel deal

from wombie
Took the plunge for Grand Prix weekend to book a mystery hotel room in central CBD. Turned out to be a deluxe room at Rendezvous. Although the room was small by 4.5 star standards, my husband and I felt it was a bargain for $109 per night. We heard reception staff quoting $225 to enquirers.
Staff were obliging in all areas.
Buffet breakfast was only lukewarm but that is our only complaint.
Did not pay for any transport all weekend. Utilised the free tram and bus shuttle services to get around the city.

Good service, great location

from Spleegs
We stayed at the Duxton as part of a package deal for Equitana held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. We got a really cheap rate, and the Duxton turned out to be a perfect base for us.

The service on arrival was great, very helpful, and even though check in is 2pm, our room was ready at 10.30 when we arrived, which we had not organised, so was lucky for us.

The Rooms are small as mentioned in other reviews (we had an economy room) but really it was more than adequate for our needs. It was clean, nicely presented and comfortable.

There is a large wardrobe with plenty of hanging space, a safe, iron and ironing board. Also the TV with free to air channels and radio, and pay per view movies. The fridge and mini bar, and a desk.

The bathroom is also small, the shower is in the bath, which is a little annoying, but adequate. There is a hairdryer provided, which does the job eventually, it is only small, but better than nothing!

There is a spare phone line in the room to connect to the internet, we have a dial up connection on our laptop, and it only cost $0.90 each time we went on line. Broadband is more expensive, $10 an hour.

One night, after a particularly hectic day, and finally returning to the hotel at midnight, we decided to have a room service meal, rather than stop for a meal on the way. The selection between 10pm and 10am is pretty poor, 2 hot meal selections, a toasted sandwich, and a couple of dessert options. But they were delivered very promptly. Quite nice, but nothing to go out of your way for.

The staff really were excellent, and very helpful with any query.

The location is fantastic. We walked everyday to the exhibition centre along the banks of the Yarra river, stopping at one of the many cafes/restaurants along the way for breakfast, and the same on the way back for dinner. Flinders Street is just across the road, and up a bit. There is a Gloria Jeans coffee shop about 50 meters from the hotel (Great for that early morning caffine hit) And an easy walk to the major shopping areas in Melbourne.

A great hotel if you can get a good deal on accomodation rates. I don't think I would have been as happy if I had to pay full rates. But if you can, I'd say go for it!

COmfortable modern 4-star hotel

from orangeblossom
It was well above my expectations.
I was in Melbourne during one of the busiest tourist periods - the Spring Racing season, two days before the Melbourne Cup. I was able to get a very good deal for two nights through an Internet booking service, but remained a little sceptical about the hotel due to some negative comments here.
When I got to the hotel, I was very pleasantly surprised to see how modern and posh it looked. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and I was even upgraded to a deluxe room, though I had booked only a standard one. The room was of an average size, but very nicely furnished, and was clean and cosy. The bathroom is small, but again, clean and adequate.
Overall, I was very satisfied and will definitely recommend the hotel to visitors. In my opinion, the negative comments posted here were unwarranted.

Superb hotel

Very nice hotel, staff are very helpful, couldn't do more for you. Value for money. Clean. Recommend it to others

Lovely rooms, great location.

from Reen12
I stayed at the Duxton on the October long weekend in 2004 with my mum.

I'll cover my review in the following sub headings:

We booked one of the economy rooms which are located along the edges of the hotel. For the money we paid (I got a discount via the entertainment card) I was very happy. Although the full rates seemed way too much.

The room was small but neat, clean and modern. I felt safe and comfortable. The bathroom was quite small but neat.

We were enjoying our stay until I took a shower and nearly knocked myself out. The bath mat didn’t suction on to the bottom of the tub properly and when I stood up in the shower slipped out and landed very heavily (just missing the toilet with my head!) on the floor. Luckily just escaped knocking myself out and being in a wheel chair! We immediately called reception and they bought up ice but no doctor as it was a Saturday.

After my mishap (which caused me to spend 2 days in bed and could quite possible have ended up in legal action) the staff were very attentive. Mum asked to change to a room with no bath. We were upgraded to a club room – which was very nice and I was bought a free lunch. Club rooms come with free breakfast which was very nice. We had a lot of problems with the inn house movies too but to their credit the staff on shift were just fantastic. Basically the manager and a staff member on each shift were dedicated to making sure we were ok after my fall.

Well appointed – beautiful building and very fine restaurant.

Fantastic by some. Poor by others. As I said the management were very nice and we had one member of staff who really went the extra mile at the concierge desk.

Great – centre of town. Close to everything. Very close to Flinders Street station and the railway lines – can’t hear the trains though.

Beautiful building and lovely rooms.
Was sad my holiday started off with a drama but they made up for it and treated me very well.
I would stay here again (if I could get a good price!)

Shopping Spree Tours Definately worth while doing - the cost seems a wee bit high at first, but this was the highlight of my trip. We went to 17 different outlet stores, travelled around in an air conditioned coach and had a great lunch.

Chocolate Bhudda Excellent and near this hotel...

Restaurants Lots of great restaurants a short walk cross the bridge from this hotel.
