Despite its appeal in the brochures, the Explorers Inn fell very short of my expectations. On arrival, (at 6.30pm), I was issued with a room that was not made up... literally. The beds were not made and the shower was not cleaned. Despite being offered another room, I was not impressed that this had occurred. The replacement room was dusty and its vanity basin's tap was broken. Understandably, Explorers Inn promotes itself as budget and no fuss – it certainly was an “interesting accommodation experience, with “no fuss”!

Affordable Minimalism

from Jo_au
This is a great budget option for people wanting to stay in Melbourne without spending too much. City location, right near tram stop and Sky Bus drop off point. The room and the beds are tiny - which suited me, but tall men might find the beds too short for a comfortable nights sleep. One small point to note - the way the bathroom is located and designed (see-through door) doesn't leave much room for privacy! But most importantly, the rooms, bathrooms, linen and foyer were all super clean and neat and tidy. Would stay there again without hesitation.

Great Location, Reasonably Priced

from babytay
I was told that this hotel was recently renovated and re-opened when i stayed there.

Firstly the location was excellent.. it is just a 4 minutes walk away from southern Cross Train Station (Spencer St Station), and from there you can take a shuttle bus to either Tullamarine Intl Airport or to Avalon Airport.

The hotel room was pretty small but the space was very well used. The linen and bedspreads were very clean.

the bathroom was TINY.. had a wierd design (due to space constraints) and of course there is NO bath tub, but that was fine..the bathroom door was designed in a strange way, it cannot be fully closed!!

my room was facing the main road but it was pretty quiet and i didn't have much noise problems at all.

Would definitely recommend it to my friends who want to stay comfortably but who are also cautious about their budgets!

Great Location plus value for money

The Pensione Melbourne is located in Spencer St, near Casino, Telstra Dome, train station, etc. The rooms are quite small but very neat and clean. Bathroom is also quite small but adequate, no bath only a shower. The room was very reasonably priced. Taxi ride from airport is approx $45. Staff very friendly and helpful. Has a lockup storage room for your luggage. The only disadvantage is there is no parking outside the hotel, so if you have a rental car you have to park around the corner. I would definitely stay here again.

Close, but no cigar

from Rillamyrilla
Pensione Boutique Hotel is a five minute walk from Spencer Street station and the Southbank, with tram stops outside (including the free City Circle tram).

This is a functional hotel for those people who plan to only use the hotel to sleep and nothing more. The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom is very small and water goes everywhere but there was lots of hot water and good shower pressure - always important! The customer service from staff was underwhelming and we felt this really let the hotel down in terms of friendliness, approachability, and going that extra customer service mile.

The website promises a cafe downstairs - this does not exist and the brochure we picked up at the hotel says 'opening mid 2008'.

If returning to Melbourne I would pay the extra $20-$30 per night for a hotel with greater facilities and better customer service.

Great find, great location

from mostunusualgurl
The Pensione was exactly what my partner and I were looking for. Clean, comfortable accommodation in the Melbourne CBD. We essentially needed a place to sleep in at night, as most of the day was spent sightseeing. We booked a petite double room, that was small, but well furnished and very clean. Our only issue was that our inward courtyard facing room did not receive much natural light, but really that's being picky. In comparison to other accommodations with similar prices, it far exceeded our expectations. We would definitely stay there again.

Cheap and Handy

from redrosegarden
The cheapest self-rated 4 star and a spot on Getaway made this hotel seem good enough for a night in the city! We stayed in an original twin room for under $100. It was small, but clean and functional. The linen was quite new. Only problem on our side of the hotel was that we were outside the dumpster I think... at various points in the night there were noises going on out there, also the trains going over the bridge squeak a fair bit. Not terribly though! The windows in our room were frosted so you couldn't see anything out of them. Generally friendly overflow out the front of the hotel from the backpackers next door. Young, casual but knowledgable staff treated us fairly. Fantastic location for public transport!

Cosy boutique Hotel

Stayed at the Pensione for 2 nights during the Uni break ; as students, budget yet good location hotel was our aim! Found this hotel on wotif and decided to make a reservation a day before flying, the staff was really polite and helpful in all ways! 3 of us stayed in the triple room with 3 single beds, everything was clean and brand new, beds were nicely made. The only down thing would be the bathroom where you can easily peak through the side of the door. Excellent location, within a stone throw distance from the casino and an easy tram ride to the city centre and other attractions such as St Kilda Beach. Would recommend others to stay there for a short holiday! Great value for money!

Cute and comfortable

from kimmykak
We stayed here as we were looking for a cheap comfortable hotel for one night. We booked a Petit Double fully aware that the room would be tiny. And it was! I am sure they have bigger rooms, but we were cost cutting as much as possible, and this is all we needed. But the space was used extremely well and the decor was modern and comfortable. We were impressed with the way all of the space was utilised, but there was nothing to trip over. There was even a little bar fridge and a desk with a stool! The TV is a flat screen mounted on the wall, and the bathroom is tiny, but again, great use of space.
We didn't notice any noise from the trams, I would imagine it would depend which side of the hotel you were staying. The only thing we noticed occassionally were people walking past our room, but there were only 6 rooms in our wing so that wasn't very often.
The location was fantastic, 10 min walk to Southbank and an easy 10-15 min walk to Bourke St Mall and Fed Square. As previously mentioned, trams and trains are also very close. There is a tram stop right outside the door.
Southern Cross terminal is also only a few mins walk away, which was handy for us since our flight left before the Skybus commenced hotel pick ups, we walked there easily.
The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. We wanted to check in early as we wanted a nap before our night out, so they even called us to let us know when our room was ready.
All in all, I can't fault this place for a convenient, clean, modernized and cheap place to stay in Melbourne.

Great value for money

from itchyfeet61
Great value for money! Great location with easy access to trams. Very small, but it had everything we needed. Bed was extremely comfortable, the room was very clean and tastefully decorated. I would definitely reccommend this hotel for a couple of days, might be a bit small for a longer stay. Reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We were able to store our luggage at the hotel until we checked in and they stored it for us on our day of departure as our flight wasn't until later. Lift was a bit dodgy and very slow. Hot water very slow to come through, rang reception and they told me to run the shower for about 5 minutes, which I did and it was then nice and hot. Would definitely stay here again.

Excellent value for money

from MarshMadness
Recently refurbished and renamed, the Pensione is well located near the heart of the city and within 5 minutes walking distance of Southern Cross train & bus station. If you don't fancy the 15 minute walk to the city centre, the nearest tram station is 2 minutes away from the hotel's front door.
The rooms are clean & nicely decorated and have all the little extras you need to make your stay comfortable. The bathroom was small but very well designed to make the most of the space. The reception staff were friendly and very helpful. The free luggage storage was an added bonus.

My only little grumble would be the rumbling of the trams going past early in the morning. At least they don't run through the night though.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for people travelling on a budget but still seeking a little luxury.

NGV at Federation square Best Australian collection. Don't miss the Fred Williams painintgs and a small but exciting ceramics collection.

Trams Work out where it is you want to go and find the correct tram number, save you walking everywhere like us as we didn't research this. Buy a day trip ticket, very good value you can use this from the first tram in the morning until the last tram at night, also use this on trains and buses too. Cost AUD $6.90.

Cheap Parking Park at the Crown Casino, it was $6 dollars flat and short walk away from the hotel. So much cheaper than the other options.
