Stayed overnight and found the rooms to be small and very basic, probably closer to a 2-star standard. The location is quite good, close to the centre of the CBD.
Overall a clean hotel in a reasonably good location.

Could not do better.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Mercure last week. We were pleasantly surprised with everything. The staff were helful, the room was comfortable and the position was fabulous. For the price you could not do better. We will always stay there.

Noisy

We stayed for one night over Easter, it was so noisy, neither my husband or I got a wink of sleep, we could hear toilets flushing and people laughing and talking all night, from above, and next door. I think they could use some soundproofing material!
Apart from that it was okay for the price, the best thing about this hotel is the breakfast, which is usually included in your room rate. My advise, pay the extra few dollars and stay at the Mercure on Swanston or the Grand.

Great location

I satyed here in 2003 for a short stay in Melbourne i guess you could say it was a shoping trip. This was my second time in Melbourne and i found this hotel to be in a great location with large retail shops practically on the doorstep. The room i stayed in was clean and tidy. We experienced no problems and were very happy with our choice of hotel.

Unexpectedly Good

Having read some not so good comments about this hotel we were a bit concerned. But ...we found it very good. Its position on Swanston Street directly opposite the Coach tourist office and departure point was fantastic- so easy to use as a base. Plenty of nearby cafes - everything nearby in fact. We had 7 nights there and - ok the room could have been a little bigger and you don't expect a view in the middle of a city (one of the moans we had read about!) but the room was clean and serviced everyday, comfortable beds and a convenient breakfast restaurant. The concierge and reception were most helpful. It was a great "first port of call" on our "once in a lifetime trip" to Australia.

Great Value

Great value for money, no perks but perfect location for accessing central restauranys and bars and for transport links. Clean with standard range of facilities for a budget chain hotel, no complaints, I've paid nearly double this before for much the same.

Not that bad for the price!

Had our stay booked before coming across this website, and was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews, but in all honesty, it wasn't that bad! We had good service from the staff, and as relative newcomers to the city, the discovery/tour desk was helpful. Rooms weren't bad for the price. Smallish, but clean and tidy. Do agree with those who said that the air conditioning was on the loud side, but can't say it was really too bothersome. Beds were a tad uncomfortable.
All in all, I thought it wasn't bad for the price we paid (only $119 AU a night), and the location was great, close to everything in the city, and near trams to go to St Kilda, Chapel St, Carlton etc. I think I would stay there again.

Had to book this quickly, as we had a funeral in Melbourne to go to. I requested the Swanston, but could not get in. My previous experience at the Welcome was not a good one- tiny rooms, noise at night, dull views but at a pinch, I took the room specifying I wanted a superior room (I suggest this is the best way to go if you stay at the Welcome).
The room was still small (much smaller than the Superior room we had had on our last stay) and there was one bed instead of the twin beds we had requested. However, the place wasn't so noisy and we had a nice view of Chinatown. The lifts are still incredibly slow though!

Mecure Welcome, stay away from!!!

We arrived at the hotel reception to find that the hotel did not have a room for us. We had booked a standard twin room. They offered us a superior room, we were quite chuffed with that, no problems. When we got to the room we noticed that the view out of our window was of garbage bins in a alleyway and we could not see the sky line because it was blocked by the hotel building. By this I mean we couldnt see the sky to see if it was overcast or a sunny day. The bathroom was tiny we had to put our toiletries on the floor because a cupboard is not provided. But the most disappointing thing that occured everynight and day was the plumbing noises in the room, the banging would wake us up everynight. If another patron was taking a shower or flushing the toilet we would hear constant banging and crashing, not something you could ignore. Out of the 6 nights every morning we were woken by drilling and hammering, which was obviously maintenance work in the hotel. We complained to the hotel duty manager because we felt we had the right to sleep past 8am on our vacation. The duty manager was very rude and said you realise there is street work being done outside, and that she was not aware of any maintenance work being done in the hotel. For one we were not near any road and it sounded like the drilling was coming from the fire exit near our room. I would not recommend the Welcome to anyone if you want a restful stressfree vacation avoid the Welcome.

Poor Hotel and service all round...

Firstly, we had requested two singles upon booking and received one double once checked it. We didn't make a fuss because as it turned out we didn't spend a great deal of time in the room- why would you? out-dated furnishings, the lights flickered, the room was across the isle from the lifts and the only views we had were off dirty alley ways.

But, the worst service we received was when we valet parked our car. We were directed around the side of the hotel where we were told to park the car to the side of the alley way. We were given a ticket, thinking the car would be placed in a more secure environment. When we left for the theatre our taxi drove by the alley way where our car had been moved 5metres up facing a public street with the nose on the footpath for people to walk around. When returning the car was still in the same spot!? We handed our ticket in and were told to take a seat, 30 minutes later and with a gentle reminder that we were still here our car keys were simply taken out of a drawer and handed to us. We were REALLY tired and simply wanted to go, so we didn't make a fuss again.

The next day when we checked out and were extremely surprised/shocked at the $29 valet parking fee. I couldn't believe we paid someone almost thirty dollars for them to move a car 5 metres where ANYONE could have walked by and damaged it. The receptionist(actual 'manager'), completely unsympathetic to our concerns told us the alley way is private property. Yet anyone could have walked by, knocked into, or stolen something from the wrx and quickly vanished being it nosing a footpath. They DO have a sercure parking area but i'm assuming it was simply more convenient for them to park it there. In the future i suggest anyone to use the carpark 150 metres up, it's cheaper and you're car will be a lot more secure.

good location, very very very average rooms

this is a hotel that has a great location, but the rooms are pretty poor.

It is no a 3star at all. To me, 3 star implies newish fittings (5yr or less), clean sheets daily, and a bit of a decent feel.

These rooms have aircons, fridges and beds that are wlel over 5yrs old. The bathroom tiles must be over 10yrs old. No locks on bathroom doors, just a latch. Air con is extremely noisy.

Bedrooms are very small. I asked for a quiet room, and got one away from the lifts which was good. However you can still hear everything in anyone above, below or in the next room sneezes or comes and goes.

We were there 4 nights..bedsheets changed twice.

The location is great, but Melbourne is not that big a city to really worry too much about location, and with the tram system you can get much better hotels on every level.

I got a deal for $105 per night which I thought was good. Realistically it was probably worth $80 a night.

As a tip, you do not need to pay $14 for the buffet breakfast. Its average..and there is a great pancake parlor across the road with awesome breakfasts.

See the Museum!!! The Melbourne Museum of Science & History is absolutely one of the best I have ever been too. Because we were over 60 we got in FREE! Be sure and ask if they don't offer. Very politely we were asked if we might qualify. We were there for two and a half hours and only visited the exhibit on Australia. It was wonderful! Wish we had been able to go back and see the rest of the exhibits. Very modern beautiful building. While I found no information about the Museum at our hotel, the concierge recommended it and he was absolutely correct!

Trams If you plan ahead and know what number trams you need to catch, also write down what stop number to get off at - I found most Tram drivers did not annouce each Tram stop.
