The next problem was the bed- upon waking in the morning I realised the bottom sheet we slept on was actually a single sheet covering the double bed- the bed made so that your feet were directly on the mattress surface. Under the sheet was a single bed mattress protector- in the middle of the mattress- serving no purpose whatsoever on the double bed. The mattress was stained at the feet end.
Finally although the pool was very lovely at night there was a layer of scum on all the surrounding tiles above the water surface- this had been graffatied by various guests.
Overall I would not recommend that you stay here.

The third bed wasn't there when we arrived even we had booked weeks ahead for 3 beds.
Staff were very friendly BUT the Hotel needs an update.

Feels and looks like backpackers.
As a hotel 2.5 stars.

Strictly for the budget-conscious only
from meng26Stayed 4 nights with a friend (Aug 11 to 15). They were reburbishing the elevators and the ones in use sure look well past their prime.
I did not even realise the room we had had been refurbished, until my friend pointed out the fresh paint and newish looking lamps (still too dim).
Bed mattress was slanting to one side. Bathroom was clean but towels not quite (kind of a faint smell in them). Furniture was retro-style (I suspect they ARE that old).
Having said that, we paid (AUD99/115) for the room, so I would say we got what we paid for.
A Bit Fawlty
from stayrichRooms are ok, your not paying for the Ritz, the restaurant however is worse than you could imagine. At breakfast today there were plenty of tables all covered in dirty dishes, no clean cutlery or napkins, no fruit juice in the dispensers, no glasses for the non existant fruit juice, no clean plates, no coffee and all the food was cold. There were 2 staff running around a bit like Basil and Manuel who kept droppping dirty dishes on the floor. All the guests in the dining room could do was laugh.
We would never stay again or recommend anyone else to do so either.
very disappointed!
from sophiegrayNeeds an update but a good location
from HarryHarris-JohnsonHaving said that, the room was very large, the staff helpful and the breaskfast was very good.
The 2 best things about this hotel was the location - you can walk to all the main attractions and the price - it was very reasonable (maybe the price reflects the need for the update).
A little tired
from Babs135Overall, we have stayed in worse places, but also a lot nicer ones and given the choice I don't think we would stay at the Chancellor again.
in desperate need of refurbishment
from A TripAdvisor MemberMaybe this was a one off unfortunate experience, but my view is that if you're needing to save money when staying in the Melbourne CBD, go to the Travelodge in Southbank instead - the rooms are simple but clean, and they actually get made up in the morning.
Very Convenient
from Wandering2010Good Location, hotel needs redecorating
from Shezamthe hotel & rooms needs to be redecorated, and the aircon in our room was too cold and wouldnt switch off (so the staff put a towel into the air vent!)
The hotel breakfast is a rip off if you dont want to eat as much as you can...we found a great cafe in Melbourne Central Mall which did english breakfasts for $5pp and they were yummy.
disappointed
from A TripAdvisor Membernice stay, great location, great service
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Melbourne
Tram There is a free tram that loops round the whole of central Melbourne which is good for sightseeing - just get on and off as you wish - there is usually an a nouncement tape going on which lets you know places of interest at each stop
Xmas shopping in Melbourne I visited Melbourne a few weeks before Xmas. Check out the free tourist paper as melbourne papers as there are a lot of free events on in the CBD before Xmas. All are easy to find and fabulous. Take the historical trial walk at night and see the well lit heritage buildings. Check out the giant Xmas tree and Avent calendar in Federation square. There are horse carriages to hire on the weekends. David Jones has a fantastic window display each xmas and people are often queued around the block to see the windows( sunday is the best day for viewing). Also inside david Jones and Myers department stores there are Xmas grottos wit giveaways for kids. Both stores have xmas decorations and imported foods and sweets that make great xmas treats. It is easy to catch the train from central Melbourne. We traveled out to the Chadstone mall( 12 hours of non stop shopping and we still hadn't seen it all). We also went to the DFO ( discount outlet) to look for fashion bargains.
Overnight Stay There are some people who could be accommodated in a 5 star hotel with panoramic views and they would still find things to whinge about! Stop nit picking people and let's get real here! If you want to pay heaps more for accomm you will probably find a spacious and palatial room, but realistically what on earth do people expect for the price!!?? From our experience, we thought it fantastic value for our overnight stay and wouldn't hestitate to stay there again. Our renovated room was spotless - carpet, walls, bathroom - very clean and well presented. OK - the room was not large but quite adequate for our needs. There wasn't a view but many city hotels in Melbourne just have an outlook onto other city buildings and at a far greater cost per night. The location is very good and near the Greek section of the city so nearby Stalactites is a great choice for a meal and is open 24/7 but doesnt take bookings so you may have to wait for a table if you go there at peak meal times. We utlilised the car park under the hotel for around $20. Our B & B package included a very nice buffet breakfast with a good selection to choose from and excellent service with our used plates quickly removed from the table. All the staff were very friendly and courteous and yes, we thought it great value for money. We attended a concert the night we were there and wanted somewhere clean and reasonable to spend the night in the city and frankly, Grand Chancellor was beyond our expectations.
