Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton on the Park Melbourne Hotel

Not a bad hotel, not a great one either!

from rjbalfour
I have stayed at the Hilton on the Park hotel twice now. With the number of cars, trams and construction going on in the CBD, I figured it is best to be located just outside the city centre.

Hotel itself is quite well located, right next door to the MCG and overlooking Fitzroy Gardens which are impressive in their own right. Taxis are easy to find and there is a tramline outside which will take you to the city centre quickly enough. Or you could walk 20 minutes as it isn't too far.

The check-in process was reasonably fast although when we checked in there were a few customers waiting to check out/in. We used the express checkout facility when leaving which was great! Throw your electronic keys, invoice and minibar sheet into an envelope and drop into the box located next to the lift in the lobby. An up-to-date invoice was sent to my home a few days after leaving. Excellent!

My room was on the second floor and overlooking the gravel roof of the lower floors. I did get the room cheap so it was to be expected. The rooms themselves are starting to look pretty dated for a 4 star. They are clean enough, and the bathroom is very well stocked with soap, shampoos and towels. Although the shower looked like it could have done with a bit more cleaning as there was a small bit of mould in the corners of the bath and a large black hair stuck to the ceiling. The bed (I travelled with my brother so we had two single beds) was nice and comfortable and there was more than enough blankets. Noise from neighbouring rooms could be a bit of a problem if you are unlucky enough to get inconsiderate neighbours. And it is hard to avoid the sound of running showers from other rooms.

My brother gave the spa and pool a workout (located on 2nd floor) and he enjoyed them. Can't comment on the day spa as I am a male so this isn't my kind of thing.

One thing I would not recommend is ordering the clubhouse sandwich through room service. It was stone cold, the chips were overcooked and the toasted bread was quite rubbery like it had been microwaved. Rather annoying as it wasn't cheap (AU$24) This was the only room service I ordered as I didn't fancy giving the chef a second chance. Not sure what the other room service meals were like. The minibar is well stocked and the rooms do have tea & coffee making facilities.

Overall, the Hilton on the Park is not bad for the price but there would be better 4 star hotels out there for a bit more cash.

Great location and great staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Hilton for the final leg of my holiday in Australia. The check in and out was quick and the room was big compared to a lot of places I have been to previously. The concierge were very helpful giving me advice on how to travel around Melbourne, borrowing an umbrella as it was raining and also to book a trip to the Great Ocean Highway. The bar staff were also great and very friendly. I had a great time chatting to them in the evening.

The hotel is old compared to a lot of hotels now but the service was above my expectations. The hotel is located outside the CBD but it was only five minutes away from the centre by tram and also convenient if you want to go to Chapel Street and St Kilda’s which is in the other direction. You can walk to CBD which is a ten minute walk but its good exercise! The trams are quick and efficient in Melbourne and fun to ride on.

I would recommend staying here if you don't mind being a bit out of the centre.

Nice Location, Terrible Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here March 2006 for the F1 race. The room was ok but not particularly clean. The bathroom was outdated and dirty. The maid staff woke us up each morning at 8am sharp, shouting up and down the hall at each other and slamming carts and vaccuum cleaners around.

The final evening following a long day at the racetrack, we decided to stop in at the bar for an evening cocktail. It was only about 830pm, but the bar was closed. The staff there sent us downstairs to the game room (casino) where the barmaid screamed at us from a distance of 40 feet that hats were not allowed in the game room. Everyone in the place turned to look, embarrassing us more than just a little. I had to wonder if the barmaid that told us to go downstairs to the gameroom was incapable of noticing that we had hats on (half the city was in race gear that weekend).

We hastily departed the game room and tried to make a complaint to the desk manager about being screamed at by hotel staff, but were informed by an underling that all the managers were "out the back". We waited along with several other patrons for a manager to emerge but finally gave up. We left the next day without ever hearing anything back.

The icing on the cake? We were staying as guests of Hilton International who paid for our stay, airfare from Europe and F1 race tickets.

Great choice for MCG

from dongola
Stayed here with partner and friends march 2006 during the Commonwealth Games. The hotel is superbly located for the MCG and only a short cab or tram ride to the city centre or a 15 min walk.

Very slick modern hotel.Check in and check out was fast and efficient.Rooms were very clean and well appointed.Plenty of towels and toiletries.Staff helpful and efficient and room service was fine.Food very good.
Pool is outdoors and was excellent with lots of beds and tables and chairs.Hot tub inside and near the pool area and was good as was the gym and spa.
Would certainly stay again

Not good enough

from AFrequentTraveller
An imposing hotel some way from the CBD overlooking Fitzroy Gardens, typically a 10-15 minute walk to the edge of the main CBD and shops and restaurants. Avoid this property on Saturday nights as the Gardens are a popular wedding venue and property is very, very busy.

Front desk service was appalling – 15 minutes to check in and 20 minutes to check out. We didn’t receive a bill overnight so we couldn’t use Express Checkout. No upgrade again and given a small dark room with furnishings that are in dire need of replacing. Again no amenities in evidence. Bathroom small, dark and smelly.

We had chosen this property because it has an outdoor pool and we were looking forward to relaxing by the pool for a day. Unfortunately the pool has been closed for some time for maintenance but this was not mentioned on our booking or on the website. Complained to the Duty Manager but he really didn’t have a clue. I suggested that we have access to the Executive Club as Diamond members which he gave us. The Executive Lounge is very small and we couldn’t get a seat until gone 7PM. Christine took very good care of use but again the lounge closes at 8PM. We had breakfast in the lounge but most of the food and drink was gone and wasn’t being replenished.

Compared to the Hyatt properties in Melbourne then this is definitely the poor relation.

We have since been in contact with the GM but have just been given the brush off - Hyatt next year!

Very comfortable at the Hilton

from A TripAdvisor Member
First of all, I would suggest requesting a room on the highest floor possible, I stayed here for a month for work during the fall of 2005 and had a very pleasant stay. The bed was very comfortable, a welcome change from the standard hard beds in Asia... The food in the restaurant (and the room service) was very good, albeit on the expensive side (to be expected, I suppose). I had a car while I was there and found Melbourne to be very accessible; also, the Hilton had underground parking - not cheap, $21 AUD a night, I believe, but it was a necessary evil. There is a beautiful park right across the street with an Australian football stadium. I would recommend catching a game if possible (I went at half-time and it was maybe $7 AUD to get in) - very exciting/interesting game. All in all, I loved Melbourne - the people were outstanding and the Hilton was a nice home away from home. My only complaint regarding the Hilton is the miniscule gym, what a joke! for a hotel their size... By the way, if you have a car, I highly recommend a trip to Phillips Island to see the peguins and visit the wildlife reserve where you can feed koalas and free range kangaroos and wallabys (among many other animals) - what an experience!

Noisy and dated

from worldtraveler94131
I'm not a big fan of this hotel. Every 2 minutes, I hear what sounds like the tram running past the hotel. I dont know Melbourne well, so I cannot confirm that it is the tram. What I do know is that if you are a light sleeper, you will be very unhappy. The fixtures and upholstery is all old. The bathrooms feel very dated. The rooms don't have great lighting.

It's not awful; it just isn't what I'd expect from a Hilton.

Comfortable, but not cheap

from N0MAD
We stayed at the Hilton for a conference. The room was comfortable enough, but if you're not using facilities such as the health club, it's not difficult to find simlar accommodation in the city at half the price. On the positive side, though, I can't fault the staff at the desk or in the cafe for helpfulness, even though their numbers weren't quite adequate to deal with the size of the conference crowd.

Excellent choice

from whittimere
I stayed two nights in June 2005. In terms of a makeover the only aspect which was not functioning was the outdoor pool which was closed for renovation. The room (a Junior suite) had a superb corner view and was well furnished and not tired at all. Everything worked - although the TV did tilt a little! I found the Club Lounge on the 18th floor (overlooking MCG) a most delightful place for breakfast and all the staff were superb.

The hotel is well located on a tram line and about 100metres from Jolimont station. There is a lso a post office about the same distance.

Needs a makeover

from bareece
I have now stayed in this Hotel 6 times. It needs a makeover. The staff is wonderful. The hotel itself is in long need of a renovation. In the six years I have stayed here it still has the same bed spreads on it. and carpet is old and tired. Lights and data ports do not work in rooms. Furniture is old and needs replacing. It not what you expect from Hilton. I was told they are going to renovate it next year. I hope so.

Top Local Tips for Melbourne

Bridge Street While most people go to the CBD, Bridge Street is a place where the locals go to eat and shop and it is only a 5-10 minute walk from the Hilton.

Free gift with ATP tours Make sure to claim you free gift when you go with ATP tours. We went for the Rialto tower tickets (at $ 14.50 each). You can also go for Yarra river cruise, disposable camera and other tours. Remeber that city sightseeing is free on maroon trams.

Trams Get some coins off reception before embarking on a journey, all day pass gets you around the city and back at minimum cost.
